This was disclosed in a statement signed by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, noting that the decision was based on the governor’s personal recognition of the monarch.
The governor had accused the monarch, among others, of engaging in activities not acceptable to the state government.
According to the statement the pardon offered during a meeting with some monarchs in Owerri, urging them to safeguard life and property in their various autonomous communities, as chief security officers.
He said henceforth, any monarch who drives development to his community, including farming and safety of life and property, would be rewarded through elevation to “First Class’ traditional ruler, adding that such monarch would qualify to receive favour from the state government, including salary increment.
“All these are aimed at giving the traditional rulers in the state a place of honour in the scheme of things. You are assured that any traditional ruler that drives development, farming and adequate protection of life and property would be elevated to First Class Eze, which will mean additional favour from government, including salary increment.”
According to him, in line with democratic spirit of the nation and the state in particular, proper elections would be conducted among the recognised monarchs to elect representatives of each local government from the 27 councils, to represent them in the state council of traditional rulers.
He added that any one among them with track record and character would be chosen as the State Chairman of the council, who will also chair the fourth tier of government in the state-Community Government Council (CGC).
He disclosed that in terms of protocol the chairman of the council of monarchs follows the Chief Judge of the state.
