OWERRI—THE growing rift between Imo State Deputy Governor, Prince Eze Madumere, and his boss, Governor Rochas Okorocha, has deepened, following an allegation making the rounds in the state that Madumere has abandoned his office for 90 days. Reacting to the rumour, the Special Assistant, SA, to the Deputy Governor, Mazi Uche Onwuchekwa, opined that “the allegation could only emanate from mischievous elements.” Okorocha and Madumere Similarly, some members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Allied Forces, who were contacted on phone yesterday, said: “We know where the allegation is coming from, but it cannot help their cause. Truth will always triumph over falsehood, especially now that we are collectively fighting against tyranny, injustice and palpable fraud.” In his own reaction, Onwuchekwa said: “The insinuation that the Deputy Governor has abandoned his office is a fat lie. It could only have emanated from mischievous elements.” He described his boss as “a very responsible public officer, who has been coming to the office when necessary, since his main job of handling boundary issues is in the field.” Continuing, the Deputy Governor’s SA said that his principal has proved beyond reasonable doubt that “he is a result- oriented public officer, who has never abdicated his official responsibilities.” A civil servant in the Deputy Governor’s Office, who spoke on strict grounds of anonymity, equally denied that Madumere has been staying away from office for a long time. “It is not correct that he (Madumere) has been staying away from his office. Are you sure it is not part of the ploy to pin something on him, so as to make his eventual impeachment simple? The man stays away only when he is out of the state or on field work, especially for boundary matters”, the civil servant said. He recalled that only last week, the Deputy Governor played host to a number of people and groups, including the Christian Association of Nigeria, in his office. “Although the office leaks each time it rains, thus begging for serious attention, the Deputy Governor has been putting up with this ugly situation patiently. I wonder where the story is coming from. I see the entire allegation as sheer mischief.” Imo needs govt with human face—Ihedioha Meanwhile, a former Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, has said that “Imo State needs a government that will sincerely and conscientiously work for the people and save the citizenry from their current avoidable hardship”. Ihedioha, who stated this while addressing party faithful in Owerri municipality, also pointed out that “the economic health of the state, between when I contested the 2015 governorship election and now, has further deteriorated, while the growing concerns of well meaning stakeholders spurred me to offer myself, again for service.” He maintained that, “our dear state has gone through avoidable maladministration. We have not only become an object of caricature among the comity of states but have sadly also, become a reference for a collapse of government.” Chief Ihedioha reminded his hosts that sequel to the realities on ground today in the state, only a person with relevant capabilities, can perform the needed surgery to bring Imo back to life. “As we march towards 2019, we must always remember that Imo State of today is in dire need of an experienced surgeon in government, who will perform the needed surgery to bring the state back to life”, Chief Ihedioha said.

Croatia coach dreads Iwobi, Victor Moses combo
Croatia Coach, Zlatko Dalić expects Nigeria to be a threat on the counter attack when they face off with the three-time African champions in their World Cup opener at Kaliningrad Stadium, Kaliningrad on June 16, 2018.
If the Super Eagles friendlies and training sessions are anything to go by, Arsenal starlet,

Speaking to reporters before the squad departed Zagreb’s Franjo Tuđman Airport manager Zlatko Dalić, refused to provide clues about his starting lineup against Nigeria, saying only the best players would be fielded.
Dalić has opined that Nigeria have the same playing style as West Africans Senegal, whom they beat in their last pre-World Cup friendly.
‘’It was a clean game, and that is what will be our game with Nigeria. They have firm formation and then open up in counter attacks with three fast players,’’ Dalic was quoted as saying by Sportske Novosti.
‘’We have to know what is waiting us and this was a good test for that. But, I say that we have to be better in some elements of the game.’’
“We have played four games, we have tried a lot, now we have to choose the best against Nigeria in five days. The match with Nigeria is the first and most important one,” said Dalic.
“I will give the opportunity to the best, neither young nor old, the best, Senegal has shown us all, we have to fix some things. There is no reason to fear.”

How Osinbajo escaped death –Presidency
Aso Villa Chaplain, Seyi Malomo, senior pastors drawn from the Redeemed Christian Church of God, including leaders from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria(PFN) gathered at the Preasidential Villa, yesterday, to offer praises and thanksgiving to God for sparing the life of Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, last Thursday.
The helicopter which conveyed Osibanjo from the Nigeria Customs Command and Staff College, Gwagwalada, Abuja, where he attended the graduation ceremony of Senior Division Course 1/2018 participants was forced to land few seconds after take off.
Last Thursday, Osinbajo’s spokesman, Laolu Akande, on his Twitter handle, @akandeoj, claimed the vice president returned to Aso Rock by road due to technical reasons.
Akande wrote: “VP Osinbajo attended the graduation ceremony of Nigeria Customs Senior Course in Gwagwalada today (Thursday).
“On his way back, it was decided, for technical reasons, not to fly the chopper that had brought him to the venue.
“He drove back to the presidential villa and continued (with) his schedule.”
Malomo, who organised the thanksgiving service said there was every reason to thank God for sparing Osinbajo’s life.
According to the cleric, the incident is significant because it was not just Osinbajo’s life that was spared, the country, Nigeria and its leaders were also preserved from the calamity that would have befallen it.
“Last week, we received the news, with shock, that the vice president’s helicopter engine failed and we thank God that God preserved him. The preservation of leaders is the preservation of the nation and, as a result, we want to thank God.
“So, this programme was organised to thank God for his watchful eyes over our leaders, over our nation and more particularly over the deliverance for the vice president.
“We will be spending 120 hours praising God, teaching about thanksgiving, praying to God to bless Nigeria more, establish peace in Nigeria more, preserve our nation more, give us the victory that is needed.
“As we all know, we are a nation that deeply loves God and a love for God that is also born out of deep appreciation because we know that God loves us too and his love for us manifest in his good works towards us,” said Malomo.
He said invitations were extended to chairman of the Pentecostal Bishop Forum of Northern Nigeria, Archbishop John Praise who gave his words to be present at the event, including Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, FCT Chapter, Rev Dr. Isreal Akanji, senior pastors from the Redeemed church, among others.
Malomo, however criticized Christians who daily bemoan their situation, saying they should be a praying church rather than complaining.
“My advise to them is for them to join us; we are to be a praying church not a complaining church.
“Many of us, as Christians, know that one of the things that angered God most in the journey of the children of Israel from Egypt was their murmuring and complaints.
“We know that Nigeria has left Egypt; we are on our way to the promised land, even though their might be wilderness experience, the Red Sea, we shouldn’t complain but look up to God and call on Him.
“That is what we are doing,” he reiterated.
Kalu to Buhari: Address injustice suffered by South East during civil war
Former governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to address the injustices and human right abuses suffered by the people of the South East of Nigeria during the Nigerian-Biafra civil war of 1967-1970, by the declaring the sub-region a ‘special area’.
Kalu, who spoke in an interview with aviation reporters at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, shortly after arriving Nigeria from the United States of America (USA), also commended President Buhari for addressing the injustices associated with the annulment of June 12, 1993 presidential election, by posthumously acknowledging the election as free and fair, as well as declaring Chief MKO Abiola as the legitimate winner of that election.
Kalu said the recognition of the June 12 elections as legitimate and MKO Abiola as the winner has portrayed Buhari as a true democrat considering that his two predecessors (presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan) had failed to validate that election during their reigns.
The former governor, however, said President Buhari should extend the same gesture to the Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, who superintended over the June 12, 1993 elections. He also sought Buhari’s extension of his reconciliation gesture to the people of the South East where millions of lives were lost and property destroyed during the civil war to assuage the feelings of hurt among the people of the region. Kalu said: “President Buhari has started a good thing by honouring Chief MKO Abiola and declaring June 12 as Democracy Day. Now that he is working, he should also remember Prof. Humfrey Nwosu, the man who conducted the freest and fairest election in Nigeria. Nwosu should also be honoured.
“And I want President Buhari to go a step further and declare the South East a special area, where people in the region were given ill treatment during the war. People lost lives, they lost property, and they were given just 20 pounds.
“He has already made a good step by paying the Biafran police their entitlements. But, the region should be considered a special area by the government because, if that is added to what Buhari has done, in terms of those who lost their lives during the struggle for the actualisation of June 12 mandate, God will start forgiving Nigeria,” Kalu added.
Kalu also lauded Buhari for giving financial autonomy to the state judiciary and houses of assembly, but urged that same autonomy be extended to the federal judiciary, noting that the independence of the judiciary is most fundamental to the sustenance of Nigeria’s democracy.

Why I stopped Adesina from replying Obasanjo’s letter — Buhari
Abuja – President Muhammadu Buhari says he stopped his
Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Femi Adesina from replying former
President Olusegun Obasanjo’s letter against his administration because of
Adesina’s age. Buhari and Obasanjo heads on The president explained the reasons
when members of Buhari Support Organisation visited him at the Presidential
Villa, Abuja, on Friday night. Buhari explained further that the second reason
why he deemed right not to reply the letter was that he and the former
president were from the same (military) constituency. He, however, noted that
Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed, who “disobeyed’’ him not to
reply the letter, did a good job. He observed that the reply by the minister
showed Nigerians the realities on ground when the present administration
assumed office in 2015 and its ongoing efforts to revive the inherited damaged
economy. “I really appreciate how you choose this time during Ramadan to come
from across the country to see and congratulate me for what we were able to do.
“We were constraint to explain our position when the former head of state wrote
a letter; Adesina was agitated and wanted to immediately reply; I stopped him
for two reasons; first, he was much younger than me and Gen. Obasanjo.
“Secondly, I am from the same constituent with Gen. Obasanjo; so, I wouldn’t
know how it will affect him if I allow him to go wild or to go public, but when
Lai Mohammed came, I said he shouldn’t and he insisted. He disobeyed me. “He
said I must allow him to talk; then, of course, being a professionally
information person, I listened to him and asked him what are going to say. “He
said he was going to remind Nigerians where we found ourselves when we came in
as a government, where we are now, what we have done in between with the
resources available to us. “And I understand he did a good job because a number
of people rang me and said Lai Mohammed has done a good job because I went
public in several times. “I said it is on record and I challenged anybody to
check from Europe, United States and Asia that between 1999 and 2014 the 16
years of previous administration there was an average of 2.1 million per day of
crude oil at the average cost of 100 dollars per barrel,’’ he said. The
president said that he deliberately refused to replace the Governor of Central
Bank of Nigeria when his administration took over the mantle of leadership of
the country because he wanted to give him the opportunity to salvage the
economy from its terrible condition. Buhari, who thanked his teachers during
his primary school days for their efforts to inculcate good morale to him and
his mates, stated that his administration would continue to invest heavily in
education to correct social ills in the society. He said further that his
administration had resolved to put money in the area of infrastructural
development to address infrastructural deficits and subsequently ensure speedy
socio-economic transformation of the country. “It is now that we are struggling
to put the structure on the ground — the roads — to revive the rail and do the
standard gauge and try to spend objectively on power. “If we put money in
infrastructure, it will create employment opportunities and then Nigerians will
mind their own businesses, they wouldn’t even mind what the government is doing
once the infrastructure is there,’’ he said. The president, therefore,
reassured Nigerians that his administration would continue to spend more funds
to upgrade the nation’s infrastructural facilities. He said that the government
had also expended more than N1.3 trillion on capital projects across the
country. According to him, the government will continue to ensure financial
discipline, accountability and effective supervision of government spending to
have solid infrastructure to enable the youth to achieve their missions and
objectives in life. He thanked the members of the organisation for their
support and sacrifices, noting that none of them had ever made any specific
demand from him. In his remarks, the leader of the organisation, Sen. Abba Ali,
who narrated the achievements of the Buhari administration in the last three
years, said they were on solidarity visit to the president to further reassure
him of their support. He said that the organisation had established offices in
all the 36 states and 774 local government areas of the country, while efforts
were being made to ensure the re-election of the president in 2019. Mrs Paulina
Tallen, a member of the Board of Trustees of the organisation, who spoke at the
event, assured the president that women would massively vote for him and other
candidates of the All Progressives Congress in the 2019 general elections. She,
nonetheless, called on the president to bring more qualified women politicians
and professionals in government to address the perceived marginalisation of
women by APC-led administration in the country.

of the paramount ruler of the community, who queried their actions. “While the

sporadically. “It took the intervention of some traditional chiefs in the
community to calm the situation.” ….PRESCO denies shooting incident The
management of Presco Oil Plc, however, denied reports that some security operatives
shot sporadically during a clash with youths. Presco’s Public Affairs Manager,
Mr. Tony Uwajeh, said: “I have contacted all the personnel in the area and they
said there is nothing like that. “It is fast becoming a trend that somebody

Officer, Andrew Aniamaka, were fruitless as at press time.
2019: INEC chair, IGP under fire
Southern, Middle Belt Leaders Forum has demanded the sack of Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris and Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmoud Yakubu.
The forum, comprising Chief Edwin Clark, Ayo Adebanjo, Chief John Nwodo, Air Commodore Dan Suleiman, Chukwuemeka Ezeife, among others, equally tagged the All Progressives Congress (APC) government’s extreme intolerance to patriots.
In a communique, after several hours meeting in Abuja, yesterday, the forum said: “We are worried about the latest overheating of the polity as politics continues to overshadow governance in our country with its attendant national embarrassment as professionalism is fast becoming alien in many of our public institutions.
“The latest in the serial assaults on decency in public affairs is the audacious refusal of the police to submit to civil authority and the elastic tolerance of the growing impunity of its Inspector General.
“It is on record that the IGP defied the authority of the president when he refused to relocate to Benue State; to restore law and order. Since the president confessed that the IGP ignored his directive, there has been no evidence of his compliance with the order and no sanction has been imposed on him for this.
“We are gradually rolling towards anarchy, as all sense of decency and order have been eroded. We have not forgotten how the police spokesman, taking a cue from his boss, declared a state governor “a drowning man” and how the IGP has flagrantly refused to honor Senate’s invitation to explain why the authority has not been able to stop the killings going on across the country and bring the killers to book. We have looked at the career record of this IGP and we have not seen any outstanding performance that would make Mr. President keep such a man in such an esteemed ofiice beyond the fact that he was the Commissioner of Police in Kano in 2015…”
In demanding Yakubu’s removal, the forum said: “As we move towards the 2019 elections, there are accumulated indications that there are efforts to manipulate the result in forth coming election and to rig the elections which Nigerians must be vigilant to and thwart.
We, therefore, strongly demand the replacement of the INEC chairman with a man/woman of integrity from another zone in order to restore public confidence in the electoral body as it prepares for the 2019 polls.”

Legendary reggae singer, known for the hit singles like Under Pressure and ‘We no want,’ Ras Kimono, whose real name was Ukeleke Onwubuya, is dead. He died in Lagos, yesterday, at 60.

The renowned singer, who was in the forefront of the Nigerian music revolution of the 1990’s, is one of the most accomplished reggae acts Nigeria has ever produced.
Reports indicated that he was to travel to the United States of America on Saturday night when he complained of not feeling too well. He was rushed to an hospital in Ikeja, Lagos, before he was later taken to Lagoon Hospital, on the Island.
Ras Kimono’s debut album, Under Pressure, led by the single “Rum-Bar Stylée,” was a big hit in the Nigerian music scene in 1989.
Kimono served a long apprenticeship on the Nigerian music circuit, and experimented with a number of styles, before making his late 1980’s breakthrough as a reggae singer.
Together with his Massive Dread Reggae Band, Kimono released his debut album, Under Pressure, in 1989.
Accompanied by the popular single, ‘Rum-Bar Stylee’, this revealed a Jamaican and native African influence.
His strongly polemical lyrics produced album sales of over 100, 000 copies and a fervent following for his advocacy of social change.
What’s Gwan proved even more successful, with the topics selected including legalisation of marijuana, and the need for Africans to intellectually repel colonialism and its arbitrary boundaries between tribes.
Music veterans, Tony Okoroji, Sir Shina Peters and others are reportedly meeting to make burial plans.
Daily Sun, however, gathered that Kimono had “nursed certain ailments for some time…We are waiting for post-mortem as we can’t actually say what killed him.” Okoroji, who said he shook hands with Ras Kimono, lamented, “This is a terrible loss to the music industry.”
Another reggae star, Majekodunmi Fasheke, popularly known as Majek Fashek wrote: “Our last discussion was for you to meet with my manager in America before death took tou away.”
Also, President of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN), Mr Pretty Okafor, said he was shocked when he received the news.
In his tribute, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State commiserated with the music industry, Kimono’s family and friends of the reggae musician.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Charles Aniagwu, Okowa sent condolences to the music industry and the Onicha-Olona community in Aniocha North Local Government Area of the state over the loss.
Also, former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi has expressed sadness at Kimono’s death and recounted his last encounter with the musician. Obi said it was not up to two weeks he met Kimono at a function where he expressed longing to meet up with him in the future, followed by the normal exchange of telephone numbers.
He said he was saddened by Kimono’s death and described him as one musician whose songs conveyed meaning, even as they were pleasant to the ears.
Woman jumps into Lagos lagoon
A yet to be identified woman allegedly jumped into the Lagos Lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge yesterday evening.
The woman was alleged to have parked her sports utility vehicle, a black Ford explorer, with registration number APP 190CE, inward Maryland, Ikeja, crossed over to the other side of the road, and jumped into the lagoon.
Another account said the woman was in an Uber taxi and she had ordered the driver to stop after which she allegedly crossed to the other side and jumped straight into the lagoon.
As at press time, there was no official confirmation of the report. An official of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the agency was yet to ascertain if the report was actually another suicidal case.

On his part, police public relations officer for the Lagos State Command, Chike Oti, said: “Information filtered to us that a woman in an Uber taxi ordered her driver to stop inward Maryland, crossed over to the other side and jumped into the lagoon. Well, nobody reported the matter to us, but we cannot just hear such a story and keep quiet.
“The commissioner of police, Mr. Imohimi Edgal, has ordered the Marine Police, Rapid Response Squad, Anti-Terrorism Unit, and the three divisional police stations that the bridge falls under their jurisdiction to fish out the victim, if any. We are still searching.
“The police, aided by other agencies like the LASEMA, Lagos State Ambulance Unit, Federal Road Safety Corps and local divers have been searching the lagoon. And, so far, the body of the victim has not been found. The CP has ordered that the search party should keep searching till further directives.
“Investigation is ongoing and whatever we find out would be communicated to the public.”
Meanwhile, a diver told Daily Sun that, “We don’t know the identity of the woman. With my experience, the body will resurface after three days.”As at press time, the search was still on.

The showpiece starts on July 14, with the Super Eagles kicking off their campaign two days later against Croatia in Kaliningrad.
And having made his debut at the 2014 edition in Brazil, the Tianjin Teda midfielder, leading the Super Eagles to Russia this time around, cannot wait to have another taste of it.

After their opening Group D game against the Fiery Ones, Gernot Rohr’s men trade tackles with Iceland and Argentina.

‘’Yes, we can win the World Cup. I think we have never gone past the round of sixteen, this time we are not going to say let us go to the round of sixteen,’’ Omeruo told OMASPORTSTV.

The former Golden Eaglets and Flying Eagles star added that he prefered playing in the World Cup to the Champions League.
Omeruo will compete with Leon Balogun, William Troost-Ekong, Chidozie Awaziem, Brian Idowu and John Ogu for the central defensive positions at the World Cup.
2019: New PDP talks tough
A leader of the new Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP), Kawu Baraje, has said the group is ready to return to the negotiation table with the All Progressives Congress (APC) if the party provides a “welcoming environment.”
Last week, nPDP pulled out of a planned meeting with Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, in protest against the withdrawal of someDepartment of State Services operatives attacjed to the four principal officers of the National Assembly.
Saraki and Dogara are members of nPDP, a faction of the ruling party which left the PDP in 2013; to team up with the APC for the 2015 elections.
On May 7, the group wrote to the APC National Chairman, Chief John-Odigie-Oyegun, and listed several grievances.
They demanded a meeting with Oyegun and President Muhammadu Buhari in seven days.
They complained that despite the role they played in bringing APC to power in 2015, they were neglected in the scheme of things by the administration.
But, Baraje, who spoke on Televisison Continental (TVC), a Lagos-based stations, said they wrote the letter because they were ready for peace talks.
He added that if the party decided to act otherwise and “call our bluff”, the nPDP will then take a decision. He, however, did not state what the decision will be.
“We are ready to go back for peace talks. If we were not ready, we wouldn’t have raised that letter.
“For us to go back, the environment must be welcoming.
“Anytime the environment returns to normal, we are ready to go back but, the earlier the better because the party really does not have the luxury of time if it wants to win the 2019 elections.
“If they call our bluff, we will go back and take a decision. Baraje is just providing leadership for the group.
“Let the APC call our bluff first then we will go back to the people who sent us and they will take a decision.
“If you represent a group and the interest of that group is not being taken care of, you will have to look for a place where you will be catered for.
“Every individual has aspirations; if your aspiration will not be taken care of in a particular space, you have to change base.
“As far as the nPDP is concerned, we want to go into any group where there will be good governance,” said Baraje.
Police Command dismisses 5 men in 6 months
The Lagos State Police Command on Sunday announced it had dismissed five out of 92 policemen tried for various offences in the first half of the year.
According to a statement by the Command’s spokesman, SP Child Oti, three of the five dismissed policemen were tried in connection with the Ojota incident where policemen reportedly tear-gassed a man.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Imohimi Edgal, has dismissed the three police men, comprising an inspector and two sergeants, who were alleged to have sprayed tear-gas on Mr Ademuwagun Temitope Solomon which provoked severe asthmatic crisis in him.
“The incident took place at Chinese town, Ojota area of Lagos State.
Theeir names and service numbers were given as 220957 Inspector Momoh Sulaiman; 429659 Sgt. Emmanuel Monday and 434246 Sgt. Adamu Usman.
The statement said they were tried in an orderly room which commenced on Saturday and were found guilty as charged.
“They were, therefore, dismissed and de-kitted accordingly. However, the dismissal proceeding of Inspector Momoh Sulaiman has been forwarded to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone Two for approval.
“Similarly, the command wishes to use this medium to release its half year disciplinary record for the period spanning from January to June, 2018.
“The officers were tried in a properly constituted orderly room and were found guilty of various offences against discipline which earned them appropriate punishments, depending on the charges against them.
“The breakdown of types of punishment awarded to deserving officers are: Dismissal-5, Reduction in Rank-4, Major Entry-43, Severe Reprimand-3, Extra Fatigue-4, Warning Notice-28, Discharged and Acquitted-5, Total 92.
“The Commissioner of Police said that this would serve as a deterrent to other police men wishing to toe the path of infamy; that the Nigeria Police under the watch of the Inspector General of Police, have no room for them.
“He warned all serving police officers to be professional at all times in the discharge of their duties and shun corrupt practices.” the statement advised.
June 12 tsunami and those who won’t forgive Buhari
An old Chinese proverb says: ‘Do good, reap good; do evil, reap evil’. This short proverb sums the intensity of attacks against President Muhammadu Buhari, not leaving the ratcheting up of violence in some the states after a period of relative calm, in the wake of the political tsunami honouring the heroes of June 12, 1993 presidential election, which was annulled thus preventing the widely-acclaimed winner, Chief M.K.O Abiola (of blessed memory) from taking office as the President of Nigeria.
Even at that time, it was pretty obvious that the unjust annulment was a huge elite conspiracy, well beyond the schemes and machinations, for which the then Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida had established a formidable reputation.
June 12 annulment was inspired and supported in spirit, cash and in kind by high-level citizens who saw an opportunity for themselves and cashed in upon it.
Beyond the coterie of two dozen or so military officials whose names have been documented as literally having had a gun to the head of their Commander-in-Chief in trying to induce the annulment, there were 10s, possibly hundreds of co-conspirators who either forced the annulment in one way or the other, or joined the sustenance of the injustice done to Abiola and Nigerian voters which, from then evolved into an industry of a kind, supplying incomes and conferring privileges of state upon those in the plot.
Many have forgotten by now that an interim government was contemplated at that time and a number of retired army generals were on queue, having been invited to get ready to head it. There was the foremost social scientist of the Yoruba stock who prophesied to the then rulers, on the day the announcement of election results was suspended that “the Yoruba will not be angry with the Head of State if he will go ahead to annul the election.” Then he did it.
In the media, there were many who conspired against the June 12, including the publisher who told their editors not to “lose your heads over this June 12. After all, was it not Abiola who thwarted the ambitions of…?”
In the Nigerian Guild of Editors, NGE where I was one of the three Vice Presidents at that time, rising to become the full occupant of the office a few years later, we had our own battles. For example, when Vanguard newspaper correctly quoted me as asking that Abiola be freed or, in the least be tried in court because detention without trial, even under the military was wrong, newspapers, both of them now out of print circulation, the New Nigerian (which still maintains an online presence) and Today, lambasted me for expressing that view. Their editors, themselves members of the executive committee of the NGE said in a counter statement that those views were not of the Guild since, as they said, the organization hadn’t met to take a position on the matter.
If you are counting the large number of Nigerians united by that annulment, and who must now be very, very angry with President Buhari for righting that wrong which nourished them, one must not leave out the men and women in the temple of justice who used one subterfuge or the other to keep June 12 buried and its biggest symbol, MKO Abiola in detention until his end came (or was induced). Naturally, there is also the fear of the unknown. What will come after this?
Remember that since the incident took place, no past administration in 25 years has asked the question, why was the election annulled? Who annulled it? What were the consequences? Beyond Abiola and his late wife Kudirat, how many people did the nation lose? In terms of the economy, how much was lost? How much of a dislocation was it, socially, politically and internationally? Overall, how much damage did it cause the nation?
Now would there be an inquisition into all of the things that happened? I have not been briefed if there is going to be any. Neither have I heard of any discussions on this. I cannot, therefore, speculate.
Should anyone be afraid? Our very erudite and sharp minister, Lai Mohammed said no Nigerian should fear for their rights under President Buhari, unless they are guilty of wrongdoing. I haven’t still mastered the art of predicting army Generals, not even this one. On this question, only the President can say “yes” or “no” if there will be a probe as many have begun clamouring for.
Understandably, anger against the new Democracy Day and honour to Abiola in a few quarters, the intensity of attack on President’s person would mount as the momentum he gains becomes manifest, even as we recognize that the opposition had been gearing up for offensive towards 2019 elections.
In normal times, even before the shocking master stroke honouring Abiola, President Buhari is a leader who had not been in the good reckoning of a powerful, very vocal section of the country’s elite. The reason is basically that they would lose when you put in place corruption-free governance, institute economic growth with special focus on farmers, and a strong drive for inclusiveness particularly regarding women and marginalised sections.
The Buhari Administration has annoyed these groups by putting in place long neglected infrastructure, establishing a social welfare scheme, the Social Investment Programme targeted at the basic needs of the common citizens and has given the country a major jump in the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business rankings.
Railways and federal roads are being rehabilitated and new ones, including a standard gauge rail are being put in place to bring better and more efficient transportation services. Power generation and distribution have more than doubled with many consumers reporting 16-17 hours and in some parts of the country, actually enjoying up to 22-23 hours of power supply a day.
Foreign relations have improved and the awesome investments in defence and security sectors are paying off through peaceful economic activity in the Niger Delta and the on-going restoration of normalcy in the northeast and north central states.
President Buhari’s journey to the Presidential Villa had been long and tortuous– having contested three times and ended with appeals at the Supreme Court before he was fourth time lucky. A candidate many had taken as the unlikely one considering that he had been a man who is separate from the political establishment. That he emerged at the contest as winner was itself enough to rattle the political elite.
In trying to explain the gush of criticism and increasing resort to blackmail by those who have lost out under this honest man of humble origins, and frank dispositions, who has succeeded so far in running a clean government, it is important to note that these are qualities that only a few Nigerian politicians possess.
To borrow the words of another writer, “bitterness is inevitable for those who have been pampered and coddled and suddenly the suckling tit is removed from them and they become ordinary citizens without anything “special” or appropriating disproportionate political clouts.’’
If you read the history of our country, hardly do we have the top elite joining hands for the good of the nation. While Buhari’s tsunami on June 12 has stoked the anger and the fear of this group, the declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day and the conferment of National Honours on MKO, his running mate Ambassador Kingibe and the foremost pro-democracy activist, late Gani Fawehinmi was, in another breath, greeted with great enthusiasm and warmth by Nigerians, most especially on the social media.
Barely after 48 hours by my count, there were over 150,000 Tweets on Twitter Trend discussing the new Presidential directive. Thankfully and expectedly, over 80% of these Tweets and reactions hailed Mr. President’s decision.
In what could be described as a twist, many of such applauses came from well-known opposition voices like Femi Fani Kayode (@realffk) amongst others.
The story on Facebook was not an exception. Nigerians were thankful to President Buhari for upholding Democracy and staging a surprise when it was least expected.
Below are compilations of some of the Tweets from Nigerians, hailing Mr. President’s directive.
@Busayo: Effects of PMB Declaration on #June12
1. Heroes of Democracy have been honoured & recognized
2. Injuries caused by IBB annulment start to heal
3. Those that have apathy for Democracy and voting as a result of annulment have been convinced to participate
It is a masterstroke
@TheNationNews: June 12: NUPENG commends Buhari for honouring MKO, others
The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for officially announcing June 12 as the new Democracy Day in…
@Yinkanubi: I must confess that I didn’t see this coming. But with the stroke of his pen @MBuhari just did to MKO and his legacy what the man that claimed to be his friend and the one that claimed to be his kinsman could not do – Give him his due worth. #June12 #ThankYouMrPresident
@MP_Muye: FUTURE QUIZ QUESTIONS FOR OUR KIDS.
When is Democracy Day? – #June12
Who declared it? – President Buhari
Who finally honoured MKO Abiola GCFR? – President Buhari.
Who started the honouring process? – President Buhari. #PMBStartedIt, #PMBFinishedIt
Best President? – PMB.
@AsiwajuOladimej: Whether what PMB did on June 12 is political or not, the most important thing is that, MKO Abiola has finally been honoured. #June12
@Iameneji: I can’t even describe how I feel today with this masterstroke from PMB
By 1pm, Saturday #June12, 1993, I have started dancing because results have started trickling in. Then evil struck!!!! I am always very emotional about Gani Fawehinmi. He radicalized me. I feel elated now
@ChangeHasComee: It is a welcome development. This is what we have been waiting for over the years. Good Nigerians have made several calls for Chief M K O Abiola to be recognised as a Nigerian President. For this government to have done this, it is a welcome gesture — Mohammed Fawehinmi #June12
@mrbhiyi: Buhari’s greatest weapon might be his not talking too much. All those accusing him of being a dullard should have a re-think. That #June12 card is an Ace. Especially at this crucial period. Like @OmoGbajaBiamila said, it is a well weighed through pass to South West
@Rouvafe: Kudos to Buhari for honouring M.K.O Abiola with that post-humours GCFR Award & officially announcing #June12 as Democracy Day. Few people are this benevolent in their last days in office.
@abdulljalo: Whether the president’s decision was politically motivated is discussion for another day. Let’s permit the families and supporters of the victims of that great injustice bask in the joy of justice served to their loved ones.
Congratulations to family of Late Abiola, GCFR #June12
@afroconomist: The recent announcement by @MBuhari led govt by moving democracy day from May 29 to June 12 is a very plausible one which in fact has brought up several sides to the coin. Here’s a few things you need to know about the day. #Thread #Threads #RT #June12 #June12DemocracyDay
@ClaraCharles021: When is Democracy Day? – #June12, Who declared it? – President Buhari, Who finally honoured MKO Abiola GCFR? – President Buhari, Who started the honouring process? – President Buhari. #PMBStartedIt, #PMBFinishedIt
@akinscarce001: The posthumous award of GCFR to the late Aare Ona Kankanfo, Bashorun M.K.O Abiola and declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day in his honour. Today I am a proud Egba man. I am a proud Nigerian. Talk your own. #June12
@justemdee: About the new Democracy Day changed to #June12 from May 29th by @MBuhari. This is not about the 2019 Elections or the Yorùbás, it’s about Nigeria and Nigerians. If you ask me, it’s a CEMENT to the foundation of DEMOCRACY in Nigeria.
@BashirElrufai: The re-scheduling of Democracy Day to its rightful place of June 12 is fitting, fortuitous & apt as no democratic ideals were ever truly served on May 29 prior to 2015. Sai Baba.
@DeeOneAyekooto: Generations unborn will ask” Why is June12 our Democracy Day”. An election that sidelined tribe & religion, Abiola won, IBB annulled, Abacha stole, Abiola was killed for, OBJ inherited, PDP refused to recognize for 16yrs but Which PMB put in its rightful place in history on June 6, 2018.
@etinmagbe: I’m still over the moon on the June 12 Democracy Day declaration! Thanks @MBuhari for making this right after 25 years!
@raufaregbesola: President Buhari has secured for himself an incomparable position in history for surmounting the courage to take this historic step of recognising June 12 as ‘Democracy Day’ and honouring Chief Moshood Abiola posthumously.
@realffk (Femi Fani Kayode): I commend @MBuhari for announcing June 12th as our new Democracy Day. This is long overdue and I am pleasantly surprised. I also commend him for honoring Chief MKO Abiola, the winner of the June 12th 1993 presidential election, with the posthumous award of GCON. This is great news!
@MaupeO (Maupe Ogun): This is more than BREAKING NEWS! June 12 now democracy day!!!…(In Lucky Dube’s song…If I’m dreaming…don’t wake me uppppp)…
@akinalabi: Whether you like it or not, it was a great move by the President to change the Democracy day from May 29 to June 12 and also for posthumously honouring MKO. You are probably worried because his PR has risen and your man would likely lose to him.
@iSlimfit: June 12 declared as Democracy Day. Finally, Chief MKO Abiola got his well-deserved recognition. This is not about the Yorubas. This is celebration of a National Hero who won a free and fair election but was cheated.
@walekareem: Nothing but praises for @MBuhari for honouring June 12 – real democracy day- and the memories of Chief MKO Abiola
@tosinadeda: Honouring MKO Abiola is long overdue; it’s a great move for someone who paid the sacrifice for democracy, BUT…….But what? You are upset because the man you hate is the one that made such a move, & and it’s somehow giving your headaches. Purge your soul.
I have nothing to add, in concluding this short piece than to call attention of those who annulled the election and all those that helped to sustain the injustice to yet another old Chinese proverb: all relationships have happy endings; if not happy, then it is not the end.
The resurrection of June 12 in the beginning of a new chapter in the annals of Nigerian history. How this will end, it is premature to say.

Super Eagles to arrive in Yessentuki today
The Super Eagles are expected to arrive in their Russia 2018 World Cup base camp in Yessentuki, Russia today. The team is expected to fly out of their Avita Resort in Bad Tatzmannsdorf, Austria, where they have been camped for close to two weeks, for the Russian city where they will prepare for all their group games at their sixth World Cup.
Since emerging from an appropriately–styled ‘Group of Death’ in the African qualifying series, becoming the first African team to reach the finals in Russia, the Eagles have played against Argentina, Poland, Serbia, DR Congo, England and Czech Republic in friendlies, winning two, drawing one and losing three.
Nigeria’s first match of the finals is against Croatia on Saturday, with the Eagles logging a balanced record of having won their opening match at the World Cup on two occasions, drawn once and lost twice. On the three occasions they have not lost their opening match (1994, 1998, 2014), the Eagles have progressed to the Round of 16.
Rohr has only lost one competitive game since taking over the Super Eagles two years ago, and the former German international defender says his wards know how to get their spring back when the whistle goes for kick –off at the Kaliningrad Arena on Saturday.
“We will take it one match at a time. I love this group because we know how to rise to the occasion together. Nigeria will be ready for Croatia,” he told thenff.com.
Meanwhile, Argentina defender, Javier Mascherano has said that Nigeria are capable of destabilizing them, when they meet at the 2018 World Cup.
Mascherano stated this in an interview with the UK Guardian, while assessing their Group D opponents.
Argentina are in Group D with Nigeria, Croatia and Iceland.
This will be the third time Mascherano will be facing the Super Eagles at the World Cup. The defender-cum-midfielder was in the Argentina squad that beat the Super Eagles at South Africa 2010 (1-0) and Brazil 2014 (3-2) World Cups.
“Iceland are a new team in the sense that they maybe don’t have a long football tradition but they’re a generation of players that have made history recently, with spectacular success at Euro 16, and qualifying ahead of Croatia.
“Croatia are a first-class side with top players, especially in the midfield, such as Modric, Brozovic, Kovacic, Rakitic … Perisic; a team to watch out, quality squad.
“And Nigeria are quite well known to us, we’ve always met in the last World Cups. They’re tough, not just because of their physical power, but because their disorganisation has the effect of disorganising you as a rival. And that’s when teams like ours suffer the most – in disorder,” he said.
Buhari Leaves for Morocco Sunday
President Muhammadu Buhari will Sunday, June 10, embark on a
two-day working visit to the Kingdom of Morocco.
The visit, according to Malam Garba Shehu in a statement, is
at the instance of King Mohammed VI of Morocco, will see the two leaders
discuss socio-economic matters affecting their countries in view of prior
engagements in December 2016, during the official visit of Mohammed to Nigeria.
He said in the meeting which will hold in Rabat, discussions
will focus on strengthening existing agreements on the fertiliser industry,
education cooperation, the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project and
establishing a basic chemical platform to harness Nigeria’s vast natural gas
resources and support Morocco’s ammonium phosphate industry.
“It is noteworthy that following the signing of a
collaboration agreement between Nigeria and Morocco in December 2016 to revive
the abandoned Nigerian fertiliser blending plants, 14 plants have been
revitalised so far under the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative (PFI); with a
total capacity of 2.3 million MT of NPK fertilisers.
“The President will be accompanied on the trip by Governor
Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State, Governor Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa State and other
senior government officials,” Shehu added.
