Four people were killed while three others sustained injuries in the Jebba railway accident that happened Saturday night.
Speaking during the inspection of the scene, Permanent Secretary,
Ministry of Transport, Mr. Sabiu Zakari, who confirmed the incident,
said two of those who died have been identified and their families have
been contacted.
“We were informed when the accident happened and we swung into action
immediately, but it is unfortunate that we lost four people while three
others sustained injuries. The three injured have been treated and
discharged immediately, with Federal Government picking up their bill.
“For the dead, we have been able to identify two of them at the
mortuary and we have contacted their families. We will continue to look
for the families of the remaining two corpses, once we get them,
government will take responsibility of their burial and we will also
ensure how their corpses would be transferred to their relations,”
Zakari said.
He, however, condoled with the families of the victims and wished those injured quick recovery.
The train, which left Lagos around noon on Friday and expected in Kano the following day, had about 1,000 passengers.
NRC Deputy Director, Mr. Abdulraouf Akinwoye, confirmed the accident
to newsmen yesterday, adding that the remaining stock of the train were
recovered later and cleared to continue with the journey to Kano.
