WIKE HAD BEEN MEETING ATIKU TO STRATEGISE ON 2019.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has denied the accusation linking him with the current crisis tearing at the heart of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The factional Chairman of the opposition party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, claimed the quest for the party’s presidential ticket for the 2019 election was the main cause of the PDP crisis. He had also alleged that one of the party’s founding fathers had a hand in it all.

In a recent interview with African Independent Television (AIT), the embattled chairman accused Governor Nyesom Wike and former PDP Deputy National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, of plotting to hand over the party’s presidential ticket to a prominent leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC). “Wike and Secondus are working to give the party’s ticket in 2019 to a man in APC, a man that is not even bold enough to leave the APC and join us. He was in the PDP before. He was a founding father of the PDP,” Sheriff said, adding, “I don’t have to mention him (his name). Secondus himself told me that he and Wike always meet this man to strategise on 2019. I told him that it is wrong; if the man is bold enough, let him come and join us now”.
Sheriff was apparently referring to Atiku. And the former vice president knows this that much, which was why he quickly responded to the allegation. He said he had no hand in the PDP crisis. Sheriff has not provided any evidence yet to contradict Atiku’s denial. He did not even tender any evidence to back his statement beyond his claim that Secondus allegedly told him that he (Secondus) and Wike had been meeting Atiku to strategise on 2019. While it may be true that Atiku has no hand in the crisis rocking PDP at present, it may not be true that Atiku has no eye on 2019 presidential race, and the former vice president has not said so either. Denying Sheriff’s allegation, Atiku, in a terse statement on his Twitter handle @ Atiku, merely said:”Former VP @ Atiku has no hand in PDP crisis”.
The former vice president nurses a burning ambition to occupy the topmost office in the land. He is a veteran of presidential contests in the country. There is hardly any race for the nation’s presidency he did n’t enlist in since he first indicated interest in the job in 1992 on the platform of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP). That year, he ran a tight race with late business mogul, Bashorun M.K.O. Abiola, for SDP’s ticket, eventually losing the ticket to Abiola after a second ballot. Atiku’s undying ambition to be president is widely known. That ambition is believed to have played a part in the ill-tempered face-off between him and President Obasanjo, which rocked their administration from the beginning of Obasanjo’s second term in 2003 till the very end of that regime.
Also, that presidential ambition has seen Atiku in and out of PDP like Sheriff said. In 2007, he contested for the presidency on the platform of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the party he ran to when President Olusegun Obasanjo completely annihilated him in PDP and muscled him out of the party, not without putting up a ferocious resistance though. Four years earlier, the time many political analysts saw as his biggest opportunity because Obasanjo’s fabled magnificence was already downhill, Atiku failed to join the race because he was largely indecisive.
Instead, he accepted to be Obasanjo’s running mate on PDP platform, even though the strain was already noticeable in their union. He returned again to PDP in 2011 to contest for the party’s ticket with a sitting President Goodluck Jonathan. Of course, he lost woefully. In 2015 and as one of the political heavyweights that birthed the then-opposition All Progressives Congress, Atiku again came out to contest for the party’s presidential ticket at a time the clamour for General Muhammadu Buhari to mount the saddle was at its zenith. He came a distant third, behind Buhari and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa kwankwanso. Buhari won the ensuing presidential poll, defeating incumbent President Jonathan.
Now, will Atiku throw his hat into the ring for the 2019 presidential contest? Big question! Let me first say that whatever Atiku decides to do in respect of 2019 is his choice. If he decides to run, he will be exercising his fundamental human right. He is eminently qualified for the office. He knows his onions. He is articulate and has wide network of contacts nationally and internationally. He is clear-headed and has outstanding ideas about what he wants to do for this country if he emerges president.
His prescription on restructuring as a panacea for resolving the nation’s political problems, which he unfolded the other day in Abuja, was profound and insightful. I had argued elsewhere before that I would prefer leaders like Atiku who over the years had laboured laboriously, fought courageously to be president and prepared elaborately for the office to mount the saddle some day as opposed to some others like Obasanjo, late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Jonathan who had to be goaded into the race and foisted on us when they did not struggle for the office and appeared ill- prepared for it.
But my sense is though the present administration is still battling to make the desired impact and the people are yet to get the ‘change’ they voted for and also we do not know yet what Buhari will do in respect of 2019 race (whether he will do a Mandela option), Atiku will be embarking on another wild goose chase if he ventures into the 2019 presidential race. Buhari’s anti-corruption crusade, even with its alleged imperfection, is been waged stubbornly and the president is being applauded at home and abroad for it. That trend seems irreversible and the crusade may sound the death knell of those who have corruption baggage in their bid to occupy leadership positions in future. Atiku is battling the public perception that he is generally corrupt, which may hunt him in 2019, the same albatross that may hunt former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, to his grave.
Obasanjo’s Rare Rejoinder
It’s not usually in the character of former President Obasanjo to say something and turn round to deny it. He would say something and would stand by what he said. So when the former president denied the statement credited to him in the media that three or four of them from different parts of the country got together and brought General Muhammadu Buhari to power in 2015 (perhaps the same way three or four Northerners brought him (Obasanjo) to power in 1999 from prison), I verily believed him. But the statement credited to him is also believable. Obasanjo was reported to have made the statement at a reception organised for him in Jalingo, Taraba State capital where he went on a visit. He has, however, issued a denial, saying nobody can claim glory for Buhari’s election. The problem, as I indicated earlier, is the statement credited to him is believable. It is in synch with the former president’s character to revel in incredulous vain-glory, in moral righteousness.

He likes to see himself as that super being that knows all the nation’s problems and the solutions to them. The sad thing, however, is when he was catapulted to power again in 1999, 20 years after he voluntarily handed over power to a civilian as a military leader, it was n’t a jolly ride to Eldorado for the country as many had expected. Obasanjo tried his best but through some self-conceited decisions and actions, which again was a throw-back to his persona; his era turned out not exactly a glorious one. It’s all well and good that Obasanjo acknowledged that Buhari was brought to power by the collective will of the people, not by any single person or group. A majority of Nigerians voted for Buhari because they were yearning for ‘change’ from the clueless government of President Goodluck Jonathan. More than one year after that historic vote, have the people gotten the ‘change’ they happily voted for? Big question!

Why an African country has not won World Cup – John Barnes

Former England and Liverpool player, John Charles Bryan Barnes (MBE), believes that Nigeria and by extension, Africa has the talent that could win the World Cup.

But as much he would want this hope to become a reality, he points out that maladministration; lack of respect for players and the inability to develop the local league are the clogs in the wheel of their progress.
Speaking in Lagos during a recent visit to Nigeria, Barnes, from a Jamaican origin, who currently works as a commentator and pundit for ESPN and SuperSport, also spoke about Nigerian players, and the craze for the EPL.
How has it been as a pundit on Supersport?
I’ve been with Supersport now for up to six years. I started with the 2010 World Cup and things went well. At the end of it, they made me a proposal to do the Champions League which I accepted.
So I’ve been in the Champions League since 2011 and of course here we are now in 2016.
It’s been a fantastic experience because, not only do I go to South Africa often, where they have the Champions League studios, but I get to travel around Africa.  I have been to Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and many others, so it’s been quite an experience.
As a former footballer, how can you describe your punditry style?
Well, I try not to be too critical. I try to be constructive, but I think football has changed. We tend to blame managers for everything. The point I’m making is that we have to start putting pressure on players to perform and not the managers, because we can see managers getting fired often. I think if the players take responsibility for performances not just the manager, it will be good for the game.
What you criticise players for are for effort, commitment, desire and also humility because football is a team sport and that is what every player and super star players should know. I grew up in Jamaica and Jamaican style is very similar to Africa.
Were you affected by what pundits said during your playing days?
Not really, because when I played we didn’t have the constant scrutiny that we see today. We’ve got the premier league, Champions league and more. Football is changing daily.  Of course it was in the newspapers, but I didn’t pay too much attention to that because I think that the most important person for me then were the managers. They let you know how well you’re doing; they were your biggest influences, whereas now, managers aren’t your biggest influences.
The media, agents, fans influence players more than the managers, whereas when I played they may criticise or praise me, and even when they do I didn’t take it to heart because the manager will let you know how well you’re doing and that is why managers were much more influential on players and teams then than they are now. For me it’s a bad thing.
What do you think about Jose Mourinho?
He won the league the year before; he can’t be a bad coach three months later, which shows how powerful the players in the English Premier League have become.
As a former Liverpool player, what are your expectations for the club this season?
For me the measure of a team is how well you do in the league. Now with this, can Liverpool win the league? I believe Kloop is the right man for the job.
He is a very good manager, but you have to look at the quality of players, which is where we still need better quality. What you can ask any manager to do is to maximise the potentials of the team. So if Kloop maximises the potentials of Liverpool, yes Liverpool can win the league.
Any star player in the current Liverpool side?
I think it is Daniel Sturridge, but is he going to be fit enough to play the games, to score 30 goals this season? He already has injury problems. Can he consistently play well over 40 games to actually win the League? Now, everybody is talking about how Paul Pogba is going to be. It’s not Paul Pogba being great that Manchester United is going to win. I think that Paul Pogba is not our Lionel Messi or Ronaldo, why he got that money is because he’s going to be a great team-player, he’s great for the team, he’s got good energy, he’s not as individually brilliant as Ronaldo and Messi but he can be as valuable for the team, which is the most important thing.
Why are you still yet to coach an African team?
Well, first of all you need an opportunity. I coached Celtic for one year. I coached the Jamaican national team. And the Jamaican national team reminded me or gave me an insight as to what it would be like to coach an African team because Jamaicans are Africans.
Football wise, Africa is similar to the Caribbean. I didn’t continue my contract, but that showed me what you can do with black players who have got the right attitude, commitment, desire and ability.
Because African players have as much ability as Portugal, Italian, French, German players and physically they are stronger, faster, that is why Pele said he could see an African team winning the World Cup. What he didn’t take into consideration was the mentality and that is what I focused on with the Jamaican team.
How do you rate grassroots football in Nigeria and Africa?
It’s difficult to compare with Europe in developing grassroots football because Europe has the infrastructure and the money. The continent has the capacity and has an end product of young players coming up to play in leagues but funding is critical to help them develop.
In Nigeria, clubs do not readily pay players, so it is difficult to keep the players at home when they are young.
Nigeria is better than most African countries but the young players are often burdened by the need to feed their family and as such don’t have time for football. There are no infrastructures to help them develop, so I suppose you lose a lot of your young footballers at a young age because of poor funding of the league and poor players’ welfare.
What are your thoughts on Nigerian football?
The future is very bright because you have players and as long as you have the talent the future is bright.
What is left to be done is to change the players mentality and the infrastructure, which means that the harmony has to be right. I know a little bit about African football playing with the Hiroc in Jamaica.  The most important thing is to make the players feel good.
Before I went to Liverpool in 1983, I was with Watford and on a pre-season to China, I recall that the players, staff, chairman, the chief executive, the owners of the team were in the same plane.
They had to make the players feel good.
In Nigeria can we see the same situation, whereby the administrators of the higher ranking view the players as more important? That is what has to change because if you want the players to perform, you have to treat them properly.  I’m not just talking about financially, I’m talking about in terms of the way they feel about themselves.
Now, if you look at all the top European players when they’re with their clubs, there’s a way they are treated. Does it happen when they come back to Nigeria?  Or does it happen when they go to Jamaica?
Predictions for the 2016/17 premier league season
In my opinion, Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea are my picks and that’s because of the managers and the players they have. I will say Manchester City first, Manchester United second and Chelsea third.

But I think the fourth spot is what everybody wants in terms of qualifying for the Champions League. The race would be between Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham. I think Leicester will also be among the top 10 maybe 9th or 10th. Everton will also be strong and are likely to be the in the top 6.

Kogi gov attacked in Lokoja

Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello was reportedly pelted with stones and sachets of pure water yesterday shortly after the Jumaat prayers held at the Central mosque Lokoja, the state capital.

The governor who had gone to the mosque for prayers to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the state holding today, was said to have been attacked by angry mob who allegedly complained of hunger and hard times now ravaging the state.
But in a reaction, the Special Adviser to the governor on media and strategy, Mr Abdulmalik Abdul denied any such incident, saying the governor successfully performed the Friday prayers and left the scene when some miscreants caused a stir.
He said the governor couldn’t have been attacked as he was passionately loved by the citizens of the state, adding that his political detractors who wanted to distract him from his good works orchestrated the lie.
However, reports said the governor had to be whisked away by his security details so as not to be physically assaulted by the irate mob who were chanting anti-government songs and using vulgar language against the governor.
It was further learnt that anti riot policemen had to be drafted to the scene to avoid further break down of law and order.

When contacted over the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Willy Aya denied any mob attack on the governor but confirmed that policemen were drafted to the scene to maintain law and order.

Ezekwesili: Army has killed Shekau 4 times but hasn’t rescued Chibok girls

Obiageli Ezekwesili, leader of the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) movement, says the military has “triumphantly” announced the killing of Abubakar Shekau, leader of the Boko Haram, on four occasions yet it hasn’t managed to rescue the abducted Chibok girls.

On Tuesday, the military said an unprecedented and spectacular air raid “fatally wounded” Abubakar Shekau, Boko Haram leader, in his shoulders.

“Those Boko Haram terrorists commanders confirmed dead include Abubakar Mubi, Malam Nuhu and Malam Hamman, amongst others, while their leader, the so-called ‘Abubakar Shekau’, is believed to be fatally wounded on his shoulders. Several other terrorists were also wounded,” Sani Kukasheka Usman, spokesman of the army, had said.

But in a march to the presidential villa on Thursday, the BBOG movement said time had completely run out and a decisive action was needed to rescue the abducted girls.

“Another key issue in the last 72 hours is the military’s announcement that Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, was fatally wounded during air raids,” Ezekwesili said. “We want it on record that this is at least the fourth time the Nigerian state has triumphantly announced killing this fellow. “Today, day 864 since the abduction of our girls, time has completely run out. It is time to take decisive action and bring them home. No more delays.”
She said the group could no longer sit and watch humanity debased.

Yakubu Enoch, father of the abducted girl identified as Dorcas Yakubu, who spoke in a recent video clip released by the insurgents, lamented that President Muhammadu Buhari had refused to listen to the parents of the abducted girls.
“The last time we came to the villa the way you even attended to us showed that you were frustrated; you were not happy with us. Are we not Nigerians or don’t you have a special interest in the girls?” Enoch asked.

“As it happened to Chibok it can happen to any place. If Buhari feels he cannot work, please let him release us. Let him get down and give it to somebody.”

Buhari’s administration has saved N1.4trn by not paying subsidy on fuel – Osinbajo

The Federal Government, on Tuesday said it has saved N1.4 trillion for not paying subsidy on oil. The Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, made the disclosure during the 15th Joint Planning Board and National Council on development meeting in Kano State.

Osinbajo also sued for patience from Nigerians, assuring that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration would fix the economy.

According to Osinbajo, “With the deregulation of the downstream petroleum sector, there has been a significant increase in the availability of petrol throughout the country for the savings of N1.4 trillion on subsidy payments alone. “Also, a more flexible exchange rate regime, we will have to decrease the pressure on the external reserve. In the short run, of course, there should be consequences for inflation. “We expect that with greater priority we have seen in the implementation of the policy by the CBN, the foreign exchange market will stabilize and confidence will be restored.”

NO fewer than 31 drivers were yesterday tried for various traffic offenses as one of the culprits, a lorry driver, Okwudili Onukwube was sentenced to two months imprisonment by the mobile court sitting in Abakaliki for non-possession of valid drivers licence and dangerous driving. FRSC-operatives Onukwube was involved in an accident at the Nkwoagu end of the Abakaliki-Enugu federal highway on August 4.
He was sentenced with an option of N50,000 fine by the mobile court during the trial of about 31 drivers for various traffic offenses. Though no life was lost in the incident, the lorry with the registration no: EDA 212 XA which was conveying yams  fell with the produce and seriously obstructed vehicular movements. Again, Herdsmen Invade Enugu Community, Kill Catholic Seminarian

Christopher Isiguzo and Gideon Arinze in Enugu
Suspected Fulani herdsmen in the early hours of on Thursday invaded the sleepy Ndiagu Attakwu Akegbe-Ugwu community in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, killing a Catholic seminarian, Lazarus Okafor, and injuring four others, including a pregnant woman.

The suspected herders were said to have invaded the Ogbodo Nwarum family compound in the community at about 2 a.m. and wreaked havoc on the entire household.
While the seminarian had severe machete cuts which led to his death, the four others — the landlord of the house Ogbodo Nwarum, his aged mother, pregnant wife and son — had their bowels ripped open by the herders who left them gasping for life
The state Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, however, warned that the state would no longer tolerate the mindless killings by the suspected herdsmen, directing the security operatives to ensure that those who were involved in the dastardly act were fished out and made to face the full weight of the law.
The traditional ruler of the community, Igwe Greg Ugwu, and the council chairman, Afam Okereke, said the attackers gained access into the building through the ceiling from where they jumped into the house and unbolted the panel door.
“We heard that the herdsmen had visited the area on Wednesday with their cows and were destroying the garden within the family compound but the elderly woman had to sound the local gong to alert the neighbourhood which made the herdsmen to flee the area warning however that they would return.
“By 2 a.m, they returned and made sure they attacked everybody in the house. They had initially left deep cuts on the man of the house and ripped the bowels of the women including the pregnant woman to the point that their intestines gushed out. It was at that point that the seminarian who just graduated from the seminary, Spiritan International School of Theology, Atakwu and returned the previous day from school after graduation came out from his room to find out what was happening and unfortunately, they used their matchete on him and he bled to death,” the royal father narrated.
The incident left the entire community in tears as the four injured persons were rushed to the Mother of Christ Hospital and the ESUT Teaching Hospital as at the time of filing this report.
Speaking when he paid a visit to the community yesterday morning to assess the situation and possibly prevail on the people not to engage in any form of reprisal, the governor condemned the act in its entirety, insisting that the wanton destruction of lives would no longer be tolerated.
The governor, who also led a team of security operatives to the Fulani settlement located at the forest near the community but without sighting any of the herders who obviously had fled the area with their families for fear of a reprisal, immediately summoned an emergency meeting of the Fulani community in the state and security operatives.
While lamenting that the latest attack was coming a few days after the Judicial Panel of Inquiry that looked into the immediate and remote causes of the April 25 attack on Ukpabi Nimbo community in Uzo-Uwani council where about 48 persons were killed had submitted an interim report, the governor said he would not rest until the perpetrators were caught.
The governor, who was accompanied on the visit by the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Rt. Rev. Calistus Onaga, the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), and other top government functionaries, promised to take care of the hospital bills of those receiving treatment at the hospitals.
“I have already summoned security meeting this afternoon of Fulani community and the security agencies in Enugu State to review the situation and determine the appropriate actions to be taken. It is indeed unfortunate that this incident is coming just days after the commission of inquiry into the killings at Nimbo submitted an interim report and is about to complete its assignment,” he said.
While sympathising with the family of the deceased who hails from Imo State but lived in the community before his gruesome murder and the wounded, the governor said his administration would continue to protect lives and property, noting that anybody found to be undermining the security of the state would be made to face the law.
Meanwhile, the Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, has condemned, in strong terms, the dawn attack by suspected herdsmen on Attakwu, Akagbe Ugwu community, Enugu State, which left a Catholic seminarian dead and four others injured.
This was even as he commended the state governor and security agencies for their gallantry in busting the robbery attack on Independence Layout, Enugu on Wednesday.
Ekweremadu said the incessant attacks on parts of the country by suspected herdsmen posed a grave threat to the peace, security, and economy of the country. He called on the federal government to take decisive steps to put a full stop to the ugly incidents.
He said: “This is another heartbreak, not only for Enugu State, but the nation in general; and whatever evil forces are behind these reprehensible acts certainly do not wish the country well. It must not be condoned.
“The primary objective of government is the welfare and security of the citizens. The federal government must take decisive steps to put a full stop to this wanton destruction of lives and property; and the security agencies must do everything humanly possible to ensure that the perpetrators of this act of wickedness in Akagbe-Ugwu do not go unpunished.”
The Deputy President of the Senate condoled with the affected community and prayed for the peaceful repose of the dead.
On the thwarted robbery attack on Enugu, Ekweremadu commended Governor Ugwuanyi for his demonstration of courage and concern as the chief security officer of the state by physically rallying security forces to the robbery scene to ensure that it was foiled and the suspects arrested.

“Enugu is a peaceful place, and I salute the gallantry and efforts of Governor Ugwuanyi and the security agencies to ensure that it remains so,” he stressed.

Muslims now occupy the Security and Intelligence Committee of the Federal Government - Christian Elders Forum says

The National Christian Elders Forum NCEF which is an affiliate body of the Christian Association of Nieria CAN, yesterday expressed worry over the fact that more Muslims occupy positions in the Security and Intelligence committee of the Federal government.

In a statement signed by the NCEF Chairman, Solomon Asemota and released yesterday, the group alleged that Nigeria is an Islamic state which is contrary to Section 10 of the Nigerian constitution. The Elders in their statement expressed worries over the recent attacks meted on Christians in most parts in the North.
There is a bill now pending before the National Assembly, titled “NGO Regulatory Bill” intended to silence NGO’s including the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). It is not in dispute that Nigeria is an Islamic State contrary to Section 10 of the Constitution. What is in dispute is whether Nigeria is ruled by mainstream Muslims or by Islamist Jihadists.

We plead with the Sultan to appreciate that Nigeria is safer and more peaceful when the Government of the Federation or of a State does not adopt any religion as State Religion. It is as a result of the understanding (or lack of it) of civilized Jihad that we are apprehensive of those in the “Security and Intelligence Committee” of the Federal Government by some unexplained reasons are mainly Muslims. President Buhari, (Muslim), Chief of Defense (Christian), Chief of Army Staff, Chief of air Staff, Minister of Defense, Minister of Internal Affairs, Inspector General of Police, National Security Adviser, Director General of DSS are all Muslims from the North. We are not too sure whether the Vice President is a member of this Committee following information that he was once excluded from the meeting the President called.

When the Vice President summoned the same meeting in the absence of President Buhari who was away in the UK, there was resistance and the meeting had to end abruptly. The conclusion which we, Christians, draw is that jihad is being committed against our country, Nigeria, especially when the cohesive instrument of state is in the hands of three ethnic nationalities and one religion. This enlists fear in the minds of the populace, especially Christians"the elders said.

They also condemned the recent arrest and arraignment of Joachim Chinakwe Iroko for naming his dog Buhari.  “Chinakwe was picked up again based on Police belief that the suspect’s action was capable of provoking an ethno-religious crisis. Because the complainant and his group have threatened to kill him if he comes back and this may happen.

If Nigeria is being run as a secular State, the Constitution in Sections 10, 37, and 38 guarantees right of private and family life, freedom of Thought, Conscience and Religion that should protect Joe Chinakwe and the Complainant would have been arrested but because Nigeria is an Islamic State, Joe Chinakwe has to face trial in the process promoting; the most effective way to get rid of critics is to instill fear in ordinary Nigerians,” the statement said.

IPOB splits, new faction TRIPOB emerges, to burn Biafran flag on October 1st

In a statement released by one Chima Osuji, a faction named "The Rebranded Indigenous People of Biafra (TRIPOB)", which is a breakaway group from Nnamdi Kanu's Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has decided to denounce Biafra Republic and burn its flag on October 1st - Nigeria’s Independence day. The statement read;

At an emergency meeting convened by some disaffected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Monday, August 22, 2016 in Aba, Abia state, it was resolved that due to the rigid and fatalistic position of the Nnamdi Kanu led IPOB, several of us with like minds shall breakaway and form The Rebranded Indigenous People of Biafra or TRIPOB.

TRIPOB now sees the Biafra question from a different perspective. Biafra will now become to us a powerful metaphor for change, development and greatness of the Igbos inside a united Nigeria, where the South East axis will be a utopia from the sheer determination borne out of the Biafra metaphor.
We believe in being a part of a united Nigeria, and a new way of thinking, where the victim mentality will no longer be acceptable.

We have accepted the fact that the Biafra Republic is not a reality but an anachronism, and doubt that the South South region will become a part of a Biafra Republic, except by force; after a declaration of another civil war.

That the lessons and history of the civil war will only reinforce the belief in ourselves to reach the zenith in this great country, Nigeria, where opportunities abound for every one regardless of tribe or religion, and even where such narrow sentiments exists, we will not see ourselves as victims. Never!
In view of this new mindset, members of the TRIPOB and any new defectors will on October 1, 2016 make a public denunciation of a Seccesionist Biafra Republic at the Eagle Square, Abuja.

The event will also include recitation of the Pledge to Nigeria our Country, singing of the National anthem, followed by a solemn burning of the Biafra flag and unveiling a new Biafra flag representing pride, change, potential and spirit of the Igbo race which can thrive any where in the world.
Long live the Biafra Spirit! Igbo…Kwenu!!!

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria! Nigeria…Kwenu!!!

FCMB’s Response to CBN Sanction over TSA Funds

First City Monument Bank (FCMB) has officially responded to the sanction imposed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) over Treasury Single Account (TSA) Funds. The statement issued by the bank reads:

“Yesterday, the Central Bank of Nigeria announced a temporary suspension of FCMB along with eight other commercial banks from access to the foreign exchange market. This suspension is based on the Treasury Single Account Directive, which stops banks from holding funds on behalf of government entities and instead, effect daily remittances to the CBN.
For our bank, this scenario is based on our non-payment/transfer of the remaining $125mio NNPC fund with us to TSA. As a financial institution with strong corporate governance rules, we have always fully disclosed the outstanding TSA funds in our books and have continued to work assiduously to fulfill our outstanding obligations.

The members of the NNPC Management Team have been kept fully in the picture on the funds. This development is really because of lack of foreign exchange availability and the prevailing fall in oil prices rather than concealment or willful non-compliance by FCMB. It is actually a widespread industry issue.

In conjunction with the other institutions, we are working closely with the Central Bank of Nigeria for an amicable and mutually beneficial resolution of this scenario. As an institution, our fundamentals remain strong, our franchise is still growing and we remain firmly committed to our professional values”.

Violent protest at APC secretariat over unpaid Bauchi workers’ salaries

Protesters for and against Muhammad Abubakar, governor of Bauchi state, clashed at All Progressives Congress (APC) national secretariat on Wednesday. The protesters against the governor are believed to be for the caucus led by Yakubu Dogara, speaker of the house of representatives and the state national assembly.
On Friday, the speaker and other Bauchi federal lawmakers comprising both the upper and lower chambers of the national assembly had petitioned John Oyegun, national chairman, over the inability of the governor to pay salaries.

Trouble started on Wednesday when supporters of the federal lawmakers learnt that the party’s executives from Bauchi were at the secretariat for a meeting with the APC national leadership.

One of the supporters of the governor screamed: “Barrister (Abubakar) is trying, we want Barrister to continue walahi. Sai Barrister.”

On the other hand, one Galadima Abba Ittas, who said they did not want the governor, added: “The Bauchi State governor, Mohammed Abubakar, has failed; he cannot pay salaries of workers and is unable to pay pensioners.

“Most of his appointments are PDP members while the APC appointees are been removed. We are calling on the national leadership to act fast by intervening in order to save Bauchi state.”.

We have videos, pictorial evidence of soldiers involved in oil bunkering — Niger Delta Avengers

Rampaging militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers, has accused Military officers sent to forestall law and order in the oil rich region of engaging in oil bunkering. This is as the group alleged that they have video, pictorial evidence and records of soldiers’ involvement in crude oil theft.

Avengers in a statement release by its spokesman, Gen Mudoch Agbinibo yesterday, said it had records of what soldiers collect and make per day from illegal oil bunkering. The group also dismissed reports linking its members to the killing of four soldiers in Nembe, Bayelsa State.
Wondering why the military always connect them to crimes, Avengers said, “It is a shame that Operations Delta Safe is still employing the old habit of deliberately dining and wining with fake intelligence from political thugs, political paymasters and enemies of the Niger Delta to perpetuate their continuous funding and relevance by leveraging on the hunger in the land.

“One question for the Commander of Operation Delta Safe, is, who are the people perpetuating the ongoing illegal oil bunkering in the Niger Delta at the moment? We have both video and still photographs of the serious involvement of your troops in the pervasive crude oil thefts. We have records of how much profit you collect and make per day from these atrocities in the Niger Delta.

“To set the records straight, we cannot come after your dane guns and ammunition. Since the start of ‘Operation Red Economy,’ our forces have not fired one shot until we have achieved this great success of crippling crude oil productions in the Niger Delta to about 800,000 barrels per day.
“Those gang members paraded as killers of troops of ODS are well known followers of Mr. Africa Ukparasai and Mr Timipre Silva, who were armed by the All Progressives Congress, APC, during the governorship election in Bayelsa State.

“If your forces and formations come under attack by notorious elements of your own political collaborators and calculations, you should accept it as a friendly fire (from your own dubious creations getting loosed and fighting back to protect their territories and bellies) and enjoy it while it last. Excuse the NDA from your “Pig and Mud squabbles.

“Yesterday was Arepo in Ogun State, today is Nembe in Bayelsa State, which is the next state you want to involve the NDA in this your bread and butter security conspiracies and collaborations?”

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has re-admitted the United Bank for Africa, UBA, Plc into the Foreign Exchange Market, effective from Thursday.

“Further to the directive of the CBN to all Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) to return all outstanding unremitted NNPC/NLNG foreign currency, this is to confirm that UBA has remitted all outstanding NNPC/NLNG deposits in its possession to NNPC’s Treasury Single Account (TSA) at the CBN”, it said.

CBN had on Tuesday barred nine DMBs from the nation’s foreign exchange market for failing to remit the sum of 2.3 billion dollars belonging to NNPC to the TSA.

Libya deports 240 Nigerians

At least 240 Nigerians stranded in Libya have been repatriated to the country. The returnees arrived in the country on Tuesday around 3.45pm, through the Muritala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, and were received by the officials of the National Emergency Management Agency, who assisted them with food and transport fares.

I can sit in my garden, make billions through forex without sweat – Emir of Kano

The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi, yesterday, urged the Federal Government to emulate Lagos State that had shown how the economy can develop without relying on a commodity to avoid the pitfalls of last administration.

The Emir, who spoke during a lecture he delivered at the second day of the 15th Joint Planning Board, JPB, and National Council on Development Planning organised by the Ministry of Budget and National Planning in collaboration with Kano State government, said the All Progressives Congress, APC-led administration needs to free itself from voodoo economists at the corridor of power. He noted that his relief lies on Lagos that had demonstrated a positive role in the way forward for others to emulate. He said: “As it stands today, Lagos’ role on the economic future of Nigeria is critical than what people think of the Niger Delta region. “We are spending 30 to 40 percent of every Naira we earn servicing debt. “The new borrowings were simply recycled into much higher recurrent expenditure. The GDP was growing largely due to consumers items.” He said Federal Govern-ment can learn from Lagos policies formulation that boost business and attract investors, adding that the Lagos example can bail the country out of its economic woes. He described as unwholesome a situation where somebody pull through a connection and rake in billions of naira without commiserate effort. He said: “With my background in the banking sector, and now a royal father, I can sit in my garden and make billions through forex market without sweat. “This is how most of those you called billionaires made their money.”

Ancelotti names son as his assistant coach at Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich coach, Carlo Ancelotti, has appointed his son, Davide, as an assistant coach at the Allianz Arena. The announcement came as a surprise, as the 27-year-old has little experience.

Davide is a former AC Milan youth player, where he failed to make the grade. He eventually left to study sport science. He worked with his father briefly when he was manager of Real Madrid as a fitness coach.
Speaking to Bayern’s official YouTube channel, he said: “My job at Bayern is to support the coaches both in training and in pre-match preparations, as well as during games.
“On the training pitch, I explain exercises or just help out with the language. My father speaks German but doesn’t understand everything yet. “I can speak German well because I’ve been studying the language for eight months. I like the language – it’s difficult but I find it very interesting. “I’m looking forward to learning many things here as a coach, but also as a person, like a new culture and a new language.
“The atmosphere at Bayern is incredible. You can sense the tradition. Despite being such a big club, it’s like a family and the atmosphere reflects that.

“I felt that way at AC Milan too and it’s very difficult to find something like that.”

Probe Obasanjo or forget your anti-corruption fight – Waku tells Buhari

An elder of the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, Joseph Waku, on Tuesday, said the President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption fight will be seen to be effective if he probes former President, Oluesegun Obasanjo.

Waku, a former Senator from Benue State, said this while addressing reporters at the sideline of the ongoing Annual General Assembly of the Arewa Consultative Forum in Kaduna. Wondering why the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, had left Obasanjo untouched, Waku stressed that Nigerians would not take Buhari’s fight against corruption seriously if the likes of the former President went about freely.
Waku said, “Look, I am 70 years old now and have been in this game for more than 50 years.“Therefore, there is no way I can just look at some totality of what people are saying about corruption and believe it as it has been reported to me. If I have an investigating mechanism, I know that this accusation is real obviously.

“I have access to authority. I have access to Mr. President. I told Mr. President that this corruption probe of past regimes, if you don’t probe Obasanjo, then you haven’t done anything yet. Corruption in Nigeria was introduced by Obasanjo.”

Don’t slash salaries, hours of work – FG warns States

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, has warned state governors against reduction in remunerations and hours of work of workers.

In a statement issued by Mr Samuel Olowokere, Deputy Director Press in the ministry, Ngige said the warning was necessary to restore industrial harmony and forestall breakdown of law and order.
He said the warning followed protracted industrial crisis involving the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Nasarawa State Government.

The minister said the step was pursuant to the powers invested on him by section 5(1) and (2) of the Trade Dispute Act, Laws of Nigeria, 2004. He said this was also predicated on a letter to the him by Gov. Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State for labour conciliation by the ministry.
The minister said all parties had been invited for a crucial meeting on Wednesday by 2 p.m. at the Ministry of labour.

He said “sequel to this, I hereby direct the unions to suspend the proposed picketing of government offices and demonstrations. “I enjoin all parties to maintain the status quo ante pending the outcome of the meeting intended to resolve the issues in dispute. `Similarly, to avoid further escalation of disputes of this type all over the states of the federation, state governments are hereby advised to always negotiate any issue that touches on the salaries and wages of workers.
“This is in order to ensure that they obtain a Collective Bargaining Agreement (BCA) before these remunerations are tampered with. “I wish to add for the avoidance of doubt that the issue of minimum wage flows out from the Minimum Wage Act, 2011, ”he said.
Ngige said the law of the land must be respected by all in both public and private institutions.
He, however, said the issue of arbitrary reduction in the hours of work was against the International Labour Organisation (ILO) regulation; Convention 1, which had been adopted and domesticated by Nigeria
He said the law prescribes eight hours of work in a day and not more than 40 hours in a week.

Ngige added that the caution had become necessary to draw the attention of all concerned to these issues in order to avoid unnecessary industrial relations disputes that could be averted through proactive dialogue.(NAN)

Okorocha reacts to rumours of mental illness

Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, has reacted to reports that he was mentally unstable.
Okorocha, cleared the air yesterday, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, after returning from his two-week vacation.

“Well, I was just coming from the United States of America, I went to see my grandson. I have just been blessed with another grandson, making a total of four grandchildren,” he said.
“No, I have never been sick at all, I have never been sick. I am always healthy. I am not in a hurry to go (laughs). I am very health and I have never been to any hospital. I am fine and strong. I don’t know where the rumour comes from but it is nothing to write home about,” he said.
“I have never been to hospital, I’m fine, I’m healthy and as you can see, I’m more relaxed than ever.

“I did two weeks plus, I know, they are not used to me going out. They are not used to me travelling and they saw this, I don’t blame them. But everything is okay and I’m back again to resume work”, he added.

Bishop Daniel Obinim arrested over GH¢11.6 million fraud case and led away in handcuffs

Controversial founder of the International God's Way Church, Bishop Daniel Obinim was escorted in handcuffs and transferred to the Accra Police Headquarters after he reported himself to Tema Regional police station earlier today.

The 'Angel of God' had responded to invitation following complaints made to the police after he publicly flogged two teenage members of his church for alleged fornication and attempted abortion.
The police had given him 24 hour ultimatum to honour their invitation or they will be forced to take action against him.
A video of the man of God flogging the two with a belt went viral on social media recently, drawing widespread criticism but the Bishop defended the action insisting they deserved it for engaging in fornication and attempting an abortion.

However, there is a twist...according to Ghana media, the controversial Preacher is also being interrogated over a GH¢11.6 million fraud case. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) PRO, ASP Joseph Darkwa, said a complainant came to the Tema Police some few weeks ago to report that he gave an amount of GH¢780,000 to Okomfo Gyapata of Mampong Nkwanta near Koforidua in the Eastern Region to do a spiritual ritual to bless the money.

"According to the complainant, after some time, he realised that the Okomfo was not able to help him neither was he able to give him back his money, so he came to Bishop Obinim to report the matter so the Bishop would help him retrieve the money and do the rituals to bless the money for him," he said.

ASP Darkwa said it was based on that that Bishop Obinim asked him to bring the rest of the gold money which amounted to GH¢11.6 million belonging to the family.
The complaint told the police since he gave the money to the Bishop, he has not been able to do what he was expected to do neither was he given his money.

The complainant said he gave the money to Okomfo Gyapata on November 28, 2015, but the money he gave to Bishop Obinim was in June this year.

The CID PRO told Joy News' Dzifa Bampoh on Newsnite that the complainant has not lodged a complaint against Okomfo Gyapata as yet but if it becomes necessary that they have to involve him they would do so.

"We have just commerce investigation into this issue, when we finish we will hand him over to Domestic Violence Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) to investigate the domestic violence issue," ASP Darkwa said.

The congression waiting for him to lead service at the Tema Community 9 branch were disappointed as the junior pastors throng the police station and they registered their disappointment upon seeing him handcuffed into a police car to be transferred to Accra, Joy News reports.
