New Bakassi won't be murderous - Abia State Govt

Following fears that the reintroduction of the the Bakassi Vigilante group might re-enact extra-judicial kill- ings reminiscent of the disbanded Bakassi Boys’ era, Abia state government has assured that the new Bakassi will operate under the law. In an exclusive chat with The AUTHORITY On Sunday, the Abia state government said it would not allow the new security outfit take laws into their hands. Senior Special Asistant to the Governor Okezie Ikpeazu on Media, Mr Okechukwu Keshi Ukegbu told The AUTHORITY On Sunday in a telephone chat that the state governor will not allow the new vigilante group to kill people illegally. Said he, “the new Bakassi will not kill anybody as was the case with the banned Bakassi Boys. “The new Bakassi Vigilante group is a decent, well-organised security outfit set up in accor- dance with the law and they will operate in accordance with the constitution. There is no need for anybody, both Abia indigenes and residents to entertain any fear about the scope of operations of the new Bakassi. “The new bakassi vigilante will be trained by the police and they will operate to compliment police, not to be laws unto them- selves. “We are giving them uniform, patrol vehicles and necessary tools to work in helping to make Abia state safer”, Ukegbu assured. It will be recalled that some people have expressed reservations over the decision of the Abia state government to re-introduce the Bakassi Vigilante group.
