Gunmen suspected to be armed robbers have killed two
persons, including a policeman, in Kano State.
An eyewitness told the News Agency of Nigeria in Kano on
Sunday that the incident occurred on Saturday, around Kings Garden, off Club
Road in the Kano metropolis.
According to the witness, the suspects were in a car when they
opened fire on policemen at a checkpoint, leading to the death of the policeman
and one other person who was passing by.
It was gathered that some people also sustained injuries
during the attack, while the suspects escaped.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Rabi’u Yusuf,
confirmed the incident, saying one policeman lost his life and another person
was injured.
According to him, the suspects were driving in a car when
they stopped at a point where the police were conducting a stop and search operation.
He said, “On reaching the place, the suspects started
shooting continuously, leading to the killing of one of the policemen and
injuring of one other person.”

He said there was no fact to support the reports that the
attack was carried out by Boko Haram.
“The attackers were not Boko Haram members as being
speculated in some quarters,” he added.
Some online media had earlier reported that a sting
operation by the DSS in Kano had led to the arrest of a top Boko Haram
commander and 20 other suspects.
The report quoted the Director, Kano DSS, Alhassan Muhammad,
as telling reporters that the 48-hour operation carried out by security
operatives neutralised what would have been a bloody Eid-el- Fitr in Kano.
The unconfirmed report disclosed that the operation was
jointly carried out by the DSS and the police, and it led to the arrest of the
unit commander of Boko Haram said to be in charge of Kano, Kaduna and Sokoto
states.
Muhammad was also quoted as saying the unnamed Boko Haram
commander was planning coordinated attacks during Sallah.
