The Borno State Police Command has confirmed that sixteen
people including some suicide bombers were killed in the explosion which
occurred on Sunday night in the city while 13 others were injured and are
currently receiving medical and surgical treatments at the University of
Maiduguri Teaching Hospital UMTH.
The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Damian Chukwu who
disclosed this at a press briefing Monday in his office with journalists said,
“Yesterday, 25th June, 2017 at about 22:21hrs, a male suicide bomber, gained
entry into the premises of the University of Maiduguri, and detonated IEDs near
the Rapid Response Services Office building.
The suicide bomber killed himself or died while three (3)
University security personnel on duty were injured.”
“One of the injured security personnel, a female (whose
identity was given as Becky Edubi), later died while being attended to at the
University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.”
He added that, “In another development, at about 22:30hrs
same night, Four (4) female suicide bombers infiltrated Zannari community in
London Ciki-Gwange general area of Jere LGA of Borno state which is within the
state capital. Two (2) of the suicide bombers detonated IEDs on their bodies in
two residential buildings.”
“The suicide bombers died killing eight (8) other persons of
the area while eleven (11) others were injured. And the third bomber detonated
IEDs killing himself alone.”

“The fourth female suicide bomber, identity not known, who
was arrested also died the same night as a result of injuries she sustained”,
Chukwu added.
According to the Commissioner, “Yet in another development,
today Monday, 26th June 2017 at about 04:08hrs. Two (2) other female suicide
bombers detonated IEDs within the premises of University of Maiduguri. ”
“One detonated close to the Entrepreneurship and Skill
Acquisition Centre Complex killing herself with no other casualty.
The other suicide bomber detonated behind Works Department
complex also killing herself with no other casualty”, Chukwu said.
However, he said, EOD/SARS and patrol teams were mobilised
to the scenes and the dead and injured were evacuated to University of
Maiduguri Teaching Hospital UMTH.
” In all, sixteen (16) persons including the suicide bombers
died in the multiple explosions while thirteen (13) persons were injured.” He
said.
He, however, called on the public to be wary of any strange
object or movement in their neighbourhoods and report to the nearest security
agency for prompt respond while noting that, intelligence of all the security
agencies in the state had collaborated and worked on intelligence assiduously
day and night to ensure peaceful Sallah celebration.
The CP also assured that very soon, the issue of soft target
bombings will be a thing of the past as police and military as well as other
security agents were collaborating on how to strategize to end the problem.
