Sunshine Stars FC of Akure on Tuesday named former Super
Eagles Coach, Austin Eguavoen as its new Manager.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Eguavoen last
coached a selected team of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) U-17
on a playing tour of Johannesburg, South Africa in March, 2017.
The team led by him from Nigeria participated in a 7-day
football tournament organised by “The Future Champions’’.
“The team was made up of 20 players selected by the coaching
crew led by Eguavoen with former U-13 national team coach Danladi Nasidi with
Emeka Amadi as the goalkeepers’ trainer as assistants.
Eguavoen began his career with ACB FC in Lagos before moving
to Gent in 1986. He then went on to play for K.V. Kortrijk, CD Ourense,
Sacramento Scorpions, Torpedo Moscow.
He thereafter hanged his boot in the tiny state of Malta
with Sliema Wanderers.
Eguavoen, a prominent member of the Super Eagles was a
member of the Nigeria squad that qualified for the country’s first ever World
Cup in 1994.
He won the African Nations Cup in Tunisia same year.
Eguavoen began his coaching career in Malta with Sliema
Wanderers, in 2000/2001 season and guided the club to a second place finish in
2008/2009 season.
He took the first local league appointment at Enyimba
International FC of Aba, but quit after, leading them to a third place finish
in the league and winning the Federation Cup.
Eguavoen later coached Sharks FC, Bendel Insurance, Nigeria
National League (NNL) side COD United and Gombe United FC.
He was appointed Head Coach of the Nigeria national U-23
football team in August 2010.
He, however, failed to secure the qualification for the 2012
London Olympic Games as they were knocked out in the group stage.
NAN reports that earlier, Sunshine Stars Beat Akure City 2-0
to book a place in the semi-finals of the ongoing Ondo Federation Cup.
The two goals were scored by Thomas Adesina and Sunday
Oluwadamilare. The team has now qualified for the semi-finals. (NAN)
