A fire suspected to have emanated from static electricity gutted A.A.
Rano Filling Station yesterday, along Bompai Road, adjacent to the
Grand Central Hotel, Kano, inflicting first degree burns on Malam Ali, a
fuel attendant and a Tanker driver.
According to eyewitness account, the inferno started around 2pm on the
process of discharging fuel from the Tanker into the tunnel.
Though the manager of the station told our Correspondent that he was
not in the right frame of mind to speak, another staff of the company
who does not want his name on print gave a graphic account of how the
fire started.
In his words: “The fire started at about 2 pm when we were trying to
discharge fuel from the Tanker. All of a sudden, the pipe connecting the
tanker and the tunnel pulled off and fuel started pumping out. There
was tension and some people brought water to pour on the fuel.
“At this point, there was a spark and fire broke out. People ran
helter-skelter and everybody was finding his or her way out from the
station. I can confirm to you that there was no object around that
could cause the fire. Nobody was smoking around there and we are
surprised how the fire broke out.”
However, an Electrical Engineer, Mr James Akhigbe who spoke to The
AUTHORITY on the fire incident said from all indication, the cause of
the fire could be traced to a reaction caused by static electricity
