Between US Trump and North Korea Kim

The North Korea leader, Mr. Kim Jong-Un is not the first to pursue nuclear weapons as a North Korea leader. He inherited the ambition to build nuclear-tipped and intercontinental ballistic missiles along with the position he currently occupies. The only difference between him and his predecessor, who happened to be his father, is that he appears more aggressive and desperate in his pursuit. Korea fought a war from 1950 to 1953.

The war resulted into the division of the country with the United States backing the democratic South while the North has the support of the communist China. The war ended in a truce, and not a (peace) treaty. North Korea believes it can be attacked and its government usurped by the imperialist America, to protect itself against the possible US invasion, it began its nuclear weapons programme.

To show its seriousness, the secluded country started launching and showing off ballistic missiles and has vowed to develop nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles that can hit the US mainland. Doubts are cast on the possibility of reaching the milestone. However, the threat of hitting America becomes real with the latest developments in the programme.

The United States mounted more pressures on the North Korea to drop its plans and shut down the site. China, the main ally of the country, vetoed a number of United Nations Security Council resolutions to sanction North Korea.

It intermittently launched more missiles rising the tensions just as the US in collaboration with South Korea carried out military drills in the Korean peninsula. North Korea considers this as a preparation for a regime change. When China began to reason with other superpowers, it started supporting economic sanctions on Pyongyang just to make it relinquish its ambition. US President, Mr Donald Trump, doesn’t hide his aversion to North Korea and its leader with whom he has exchanged bellicose rhetorics. He has called Mr Kim several names and threatened to descend on the country with fire and fury.

While tensions are soaring, a US citizen detained in North Korea, Otto Warmbier, lost his life on his release to the US government. But the UN and US sanctions bite harder that the country seems not to be able to withstand. It doesn’t want to appear weak or a loser in the diplomatic row, therefore it waited for the right opportunity which came during the 2018 Winter Olympics Games held in PycheoChang, South Korea.

South Korean President, Moon Jae-in, who believes in the unification of the divided Korea, rose to the occasion to build on the positive changes and readiness of the North to achieve peace. He has made a lot of efforts to bring the two main parties in the crisis to the roundtable.

The US may be planning a regime change just as Mr. Bolton has announced. It may, therefore, be buying enough time for itself in order to get its “nukes” ready before any meeting.
