A human rights group, Campaign for Democracy, CD, has
appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari and the Police Service Commission, PSC,
not to retire the 20 Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, AIGs due to the
recent appointment of their junior officer, Idris Ibrahim as Acting
Inspector-General of Police, Acting IGP.
The group noted that the retirement of the 20 officers
enlisted in force before the new Acting IGP will not augur well for the country
especially now that the country is being faced with security challenges. The
National Publicity Secretary of CD, Dede Uzor Uzor, weekend, appealed to the
Chairman of PSC and President Buhari to have a re-think over the proposed
retirement because it will affect the police force due to their wealth of
experience over the years. According to him, “the retirement of 20 senior AIGs,
who enlisted in the force before the new IGP is not the ideal thing at present
when there are security lapses in the country.
They are the officers who form a
generation of police and to retire them will create a massive vacuum of both
experienced and highly sound professional officers, who are specialists in
fields that will affect the police badly. “We need their services especially
now the country is being faced with security challenges such as Boko Haram,
militancy, armed robbery and kidnapping among other crimes”.
