Senator Saidu Mohammed Dansadau has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a state of emergency in Zamfara State,in order to avert what he called, further destruction of lives and property in the state.
Dansadau who said that he was calling for the intervention of the federal government , also asked the presidency to appoint a sole administrator, insisting that it is the only solution to the lingering problem in the state.
The former federal lawmaker who represented Zamfara Central in the 4th and 5th National Assembly, blamed the governor of the state, Alhaji Abdulaziz Yari for abandoning his constitutional duties of protecting lives and property as the actives of cattle rustlers and Fulani herdsmen who rape, maim and kill innocent people rages, claiming that there is no more safety in the state.
He said the governor was interested in globe-trotting, while the state boils, accusing the governor of not spending quality time in the state.
Sen Dansadau disclosed that about 360 people were killed by the activities of the cattle rustlers in the last five years.
Addressing journalists yesterday in Abuja ,Sen Dansadau, who said he submitted a copy of his letter to President Muhammadu Buhari and the Senate President, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki expressed concern that if nothing urgent is done by the Federal government to arrest the situation, it may escalate to other states.
He said “This dereliction of responsibility by the governor of Zamfara State has cost the state, unimaginable number of precious lives and property worth billions of naira.
“In Dansadau state constituency alone, about 360 people have been killed. If the killings in the remaining 23 state constituencies in the state are added, the total number of lives lost can better be imagined. All these losses would have been averted were the governor alive to his constitutional responsibilities.
“One of the pitiful manifestations of the governor’s nonchalant approach to governance is the mismanagement of the relationship between cattle herdsmen and settled farmers in Zamfara State, giving rise to what is now known as cattle rustling.
According to him, the colossal mismanagement of this relationship is costing the state dearly, adding, “ From time immemorial, there has been harmonious co- existence between Hausa indigenes and Fulani settlers in Zamfara. In the first 12 years of democracy since 1999, both groups lived in peace, with each respecting the sensibilities of the other.
There were no killings of tribal coloration; until Governor Yari took the reins of governance in Zamfara State.
Since then, there has been a trail of daily killings, abductions, rapes, kidnappings, attacks on rustic villages, the scale, regularity and ferocity we have never witnessed before.
