Fire razes 884 shops at Sabon-Gari market, Kano

Traders at Abubakar Rimi market otherwise known as Sabon Gari market have been visited by another ill-fate as a fresh fire outbreak gutted part of the food stuff section of the market, razing down about 884 make-shift stalls with goods worth several millions of Naira.


According to market sources, the fire which started at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday affected the Gidan Maggi area of the ever busy market. But for the timely intervention of officials of the state fire service, the inferno which started at the wee hours of Saturday would have spread to other parts of the market which has suffered three fire incidents within eight months.

The AUTHORITY recalls that in December last year, a mysterious fire gutted the furniture section of the market, destroying goods worth billions of Naira.

Also in March this year, a wild fire which cause is yet to be ascertained ravaged almost half of the same market also known as Yankura market.

Though the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained as at the time of filling in this report, market sources said that it could as a result of the carelessness on the part of market guards who must have dropped inflammable object within the area.

The AUTHORITY reports that food stuff such as meat, beans, gari, rice, chickens, onion, beverages, as well fruits and other goods were all burnt to ashes.

Kano state Commissioner for Works, Alhaji Shehu Haruna Lambu who visited the scene of the fire incident on behalf of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje sympathized with the traders and promised that the state government will investigate the cause of the fire incident.

He, advised traders to be more careful and promised that the state government will do all within its powers to assist the victims of the fire incident.


Lambu said that about 884 temporary stalls were affected in the inferno, “as you can see, the fire did not spread much due to the effort of the fire service men who arrived here on time. I am here with the Commandant and you can see it yourself that the fire has been contained within a very short period.”
