“Nobody remembers the ones who finish second. To lose two finals is a failure. We must now go home and tend to our wounds,” Simeone was quoted as saying by goal.com.
The Atletico manager, however, congratulated Real on their victory, saying that the latter were once again superior than his side. “We started the game badly, and then we got ourselves organised from the 20th minute. In the second half we could have equalised very quickly but our intention was clear,” he added.
After both the sides equalised the score, the match was sent to the extra time. In the penalty shoot-out, Lucas Vazquez, Marcelo and Gareth Bale netted three goals for Real while Griezmann, Gabi and Saul Niguez scored for Atletico in reply to equal the score.
Ramos scored the fourth penalty for Real to give his side a lead yet again. Subsequently, Atletico defender Juanfran missed the fourth penalty for his side, giving Ronaldo with a chance to seal victory for Real.
