Former Taraba Gov, Danbaba Suntai, Dies At 56

Former governor of Taraba State, Pharm Danbaba Suntai, is dead. Suntai who survived an air crash at the Yola Airport in 2012 died at home yesterday.

He is reported to have brain injuries arising from the plane accident. The former governor who flew the light plane himself crashed in October 2012 and had not recovered fully since then.

Mr. Emmanuel Bello, a former commissioner for Information in the state, broke the news of his death.

Suntai became governor of Taraba State in 2007 and was sworn in again on May 29, 2011 for a second term. A pharmacist by training, Suntai enrolled for training as a pilot at the Nigerian College of Aviation in Zaria in 2010 and was thus licensed.

Prior to his plane crash in 2012, Suntai had been flown to Germany for medication after returning from his annual leave in August 2009, following a sudden ailment that was suspected to have developed from food poisoning.

On his return from Germany, Suntai spoke at the opening of a three-day regional convention of the Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship International in Jalingo, where he said his meal was actually poisoned.

He had had several successful flights with his private aircraft even while piloting the affairs of Taraba State as governor.

But the travails which remained with him till he breath his last started precisely on October 25, 2012 when a private plane he piloted crashed in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.

After receiving the initial treatment at the Adamawa Standard German Hospital in Yola, he was later transferred to the National Hospital Abuja on October 26, 2012. From there, he was flown to Germany and was later taken to a rehabilitation centre in the United States for further medication.

After 10 months of medical sojourn overseas, the Late Suntai finally returned to the country on August 23, 2013.

After weeks of political intrigues in the North-East state based on claims and counter-claims over his health status, it was revealed that the former Taraba State governor was not healthy enough to live in Nigeria without adequate treatment, or to govern a state.

He was subsequently flown abroad again for treatment, even as his then deputy, Garba Umar, was empowered by the Taraba State House of Assembly to fully take over the ship of the state in acting capacity.

He was brought back in the build-up to the 2015 elections and remained confined in Jalingo until after the change of guards on May 29, 2015.

In a condolence message, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara expressed sadness, noting that Suntai left indelible footprints.

Dogara, in a statement signed by his special adviser on media and public affairs, Mr Turaki Hassan, Dogara prayed Almighty God to comfort Suntai’s immediate family.

The Speaker who also commiserated with the government and people of Taraba State said the former governor’s death is particularly painful because he was a dedicated and purpose driven leader who had the interest of his people at heart, adding that the deceased left indelible footprints on the development landscape of the state.

He said, “I received the news of the death of former governor Suntai with a deep feeling of sadness but God is the author of life, from Him we came and to Him we will return.

“To the government and people of Taraba State, I extend my heartfelt condolences, and to his immediate family members who are the ones who will feel the pain more deeply. I pray God comforts you and gives you the fortitude to bear the loss”.

His Life And Times

He attended Federal Government College, Kano between  1975 and 1980, as well as the School of Basic Studies at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria between1980 to 1981.

He was admitted to Ahmadu Bello University where he read Pharmacy and graduated in 1984.

He did his internship at Yola Specialist Hospital and his National Youth Service at the State Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta, Ogun State between 1985 and1986 respectively.

He then worked at the General Hospital, Ganye in old Gongola State until 1991 when Taraba State was created. He joined the Taraba State civil service as director-general of the state ministry of Agriculture and National Resources from 1994 to 1996.

He  was elected chairman of Bali local government area of Taraba State where he held sway between 1989 and 1993.

During the 1999 general election, he was the state chairman of the All People’s Party (APP) when the PDP narrowly defeated the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP). In 2000, he became chairman of Taraba State Investment and Properties Ltd.

He was appointed commissioner for Education in 2001. He worked at the ministry of Health from 2003 to 2005 before becoming Secretary to the Taraba State Government under former governor Jolly Nyame’s administration in between  2005 and 2007.

In the run-up to the 2007 elections, Danladi Baido won the PDP gubernatorial primaries but was later disqualified. Two months before the election, the PDP national secretariat replaced Baido with Suntai who did not contest in the party primaries. Baido lent his support to Suntai and in April 2007, Suntai won election as governor of Taraba State.

During his tenure as governor of Taraba State, Suntai made efforts to fight corruption, crime and lack of discipline, while delegating authority and providing funds to the local government areas.

After governing for six years, the late Suntai and three of his aides were in October 2012 involved in an air crash after their private plane, Cessna 208 aircraft marked 5N-BMJ, crashed in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.

The plane which he piloted hit the ground behind the NNPC depot, along Yola-Numan Road at about 7:00pm.

Two week to his plane crash, Suntai appointed Alhaji Garba Umar, a businessman and politician as his new deputy governor of Taraba State.

Umar’s appointment in 2013 followed the impeachment of the former Deputy Governor, Alhaji Sani Abubakar, based on allegations of gross misconduct levelled against him by the state lawmakers.

The late Suntai had always had a date with history. Providence beckoned on him when he became governor of Taraba state in 2007 even without aspiring for the coveted office. He was sworn in on May 29, 2011 for a second term after winning the governorship election for the year.

Though a pharmacist by training, Suntai enrolled for training as a pilot at the Nigerian College of Aviation in Zaria in 2010 and was thus licensed, albeit under controversial circumstances, as a qualified pilot.

Before his death, Suntai was survivor of many critical political battles.

PDP: Makarfi, Sheriff Groups tango over alliance with Labour

WITH the July 22 local government election around the corner, this may not be the best of times for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Lagos State. The two factions laying claim to the party structure in the state, Moshood Salvador and Segun Adewale are at each other’s throat as a result of an alliance being entered into with the Labour Party, LP. The Moshood Salvador-led faction had at a press conference announced an alliance with the LP for the council elections. Salvador, who leads the Ahmed Makarfi faction of the PDP, said that the alliance was a temporary arrangement, and that all PDP candidates for the polls would contest on the LP platform. Sheriff and Makarfi Salvador said: “What we are announcing today is alliance with Labour Party to enable our candidates to participate in the elections. Political alliance is an agreement for co-operation between political parties on common agenda, often for the purpose of contesting elections. This alliance does not mean we are leaving the party. We are PDP anytime. We only have a pre-election alliance. This is not the first time we are having such in the country’s political history.” While appealing to party loyalists in the state to buy into the PDP-LP alliance, he restated that it was an alliance and not defection. He said: “It is an alliance. We have not defected to another party; we have not declared for another party and we have not dumped the PDP.” Adewale reacts Faulting the alliance, Segun Adewale, who heads the Senator Ali Modu Sheriff-led faction, described the step as unfortunate and uncalled for. Adewale, also referred to as Areoland claimed that his faction made efforts to accommodate the other faction but Salvador frustrated the moves. The factional chairman urged Salvador to return to the legally recognised authorities, the money his faction realised from sale of nomination forms to aspirants on the platform of PDP. He said that he would set up a disciplinary committee to probe the alliance and mete out sanctions to anybody found culpable. “How can you buy nomination forms on the platform of PDP and defect to Labour Party for the elections. It is a clear illegal act”, he said.

Evans sues Police, says charge me or free me, dad files 27-point affidavit in support

LAGOS — Kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike a.k.a. Evans, has dragged the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris and three others before the Federal High Court in Lagos over alleged illegal detention. EVANSEVANS Joined as respondents in the suit are the Nigeria Police Force, Commissioner of Police, Lagos State and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Lagos State Police Command. In the rights enforcement suit filed on his behalf by a Lagos-based lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje, Evans is praying for the order of court to direct the respondents to immediately charge him to court if there is any case against him in accordance with Sections 35 (1) (c) (3) (4) (5) (a) (b) and 36 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. In the alternative, he is praying the court to compel the respondents to immediately release him unconditionally in the absence of any offence that will warrant his being charged to court. Evans is further contending in the suit that his continued detention by the respondents since June 10, 2017, without being charged to court or released on bail is an infringement on his fundamental human rights. He argued that the respondents ought to have charged him to court in accordance with the provisions of Sections 35 and 36 of the Constitution. It was further argued that the alleged offence committed by the applicant (Evans) are correspondingly intertwined with the constitutional safeguards as provided under Sections 35 and 36 of the Constitution. Evans’ dad deposes to affidavit in son’s support To support Evans’ case, his father, Stephen Onwuamadike personally deposed to a 27-paragraph affidavit in support of the suit. In his affidavit, Evans’ father averred that his son (applicant) has been subjected to media trial without any court order by the respondents. He further averred that the media trial and news orchestrated by the respondents have continued to generate reactions in both print and electronic media without his son being afforded fair hearing and trial before a court of law. He added that since his son’s arrest, all his family members have been denied access to him while media practitioners have been granted unfettered access to him. The matter has not been assigned to any judge and no date has been fixed for the hearing. We have court order to hold him for 3 months — Police Meanwhile, reacting to the suit, spokesman for the Police High Command, Jimoh Moshood said that the Police had obtained a court order from a Federal High Court, Abuja, to detain Evans for three months, in order to allow them carry out proper investigation on the suspect. The investigation, according to the police will take operatives to Ghana, South Africa and many parts of the country before he could be arraigned. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Administration, in the Lagos Command, Dasuki Galandanci had told journalists last Friday that the Police is in the midst of a thorough investigation on Evans. He said: “Evans has been a kidnapper for a long time and has been on the wanted list of the Police in Anambra, Abuja, Enugu, Edo and Lagos States. He also has a criminal gang, some of whom have been arrested in Enugu and Lagos. “But there are still more out there. Therefore, this needs a painstaking investigation. Besides, we need to understudy him as well as debrief him properly. By so doing, we intend to use his tactics to get others. He will eventually be charged to court after investigation is concluded.” ‘He is innocent before the law until proved guilty’ Also, reacting to Evans suit, a lawyer and Don, Gbenga Ojo, said, “It may surprise Nigerians that he had to approach the court, however, in the eyes of the law, he is presumed innocent until pronounced guilty by a competent court. However, as it is, I don’t think any court will grant him bail considering the allegations levelled against him. “It is the same law that gives him fundamental human rights to seek redress in court that provides that no one can kill other persons unlawfully or kidnap and subject victims to unbearable conditions. So, the court will look at all these before considering to do anything. In my opinion, no court will allow such application to fly. “However, if the prosecution is not ready to arraign him now due to their investigation, they should take him to the magistrate court to get a remand order, pending the conclusion of their investigation.”

Teachers protest against council autonomy in Oyo

The Oyo State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), yesterday staged a peaceful protest against the proposed local governments’ autonomy in Ibadan, the capital city.

They said if local governments autonomy was imperative for the federal and state governments, payment of primary school teachers, funding and management of the schools should not be the responsibility of the local councils.

The rally, which took-off at the Agodi Secretariat of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), was led by the state chairman, Niyi Akano and the state Trade Unions Congress (TUC) chairman, Waheed Olojede, to deliver their protest letter to Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

The placards carrying teachers argued that granting political, financial or administrative autonomy to the local government, would mean transferring the management, equipping and funding of primary school education to the local government.

They said the burden would be too heavy for the third tier of government to bear. Some of the inscriptions on the placard read: “Nigeria Union of Teachers, Oyo State Wing says no to local government’s autonomy,” “Basic education is a right of every child,” “Local government councils do not have the capacity to pay primary school teachers salaries,” “Basic education is a right and must be protected by all,” “Foundation of education in Nigeria under threat again,” among others.

Akano said that the rally was not a protest against salary arrears but a fight for the soul of primary education in the state and the country at large.Olojede maintained that allowing the local governments to take charge of the primary school education in the country was a good way of sending the sector back to the woods, saying that the teachers would not support local government autonomy in any way

He suggested that payment of primary school teachers’ salaries and entitlements should be left with State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).Deputy Governor, Moses Adeyemo assured that he would deliver their demands of the group to the governor.Adeyemo who expressed shock at the massive turn out noted that until the protest, he had thought the teachers are strong advocate of local government autonomy.
