INEC gives update on 2019 elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), says it is working hard to ensure that no eligible voter in the country is disenfranchised during the 2019 general election.

INEC also called on those who did not register to vote in 2015 and those who attained the age of 18 years after the last general election to do so now.

Alhaji Abdullahi Kaugama, INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner [REC] in Kaduna State, spoke on Tuesday in Kaduna during a meeting with political parties and other election stakeholders on Continuous Voter Registration.

The REC said that the nationwide continuous voters registration was meant to capture all eligible voters ahead of the 2019 polls.

According to him, the exercise will be flagged-off in the state at Hunkuyi, Kudan Local Government on Thursday, and would subsequently commence in all INEC offices in the 23 local government areas of the state.

Kaugama explained that the exercise was restricted to INEC local council offices due to logistics constraints, but would later be extended to all the 255 wards and polling units.

He urged political parties, CSOs, and the media to monitor the exercise to ensure that no person register by proxy.

The REC said those registered during the exercise would collect their permanent voters card three months after the exercise.

How ex-INEC Chairman, Jega disappointed me in 2015 – Goodluck Jonathan

The immediate past President, Goodluck Jonathan despite conceding defeat after the 2015 Presidential election ha expressed disappointment with how the then Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Attahiru Jega conducted the election.

This revelation was contained in a book written by the Chairman of THISDAY editorial board, Segun Adeniyi.

In the book which will be launched on Friday, Adeniyi quoted the former President as saying Jega disappointed him.

The former President also said he had a meeting with Jega to express his reservations about the preparedness of INEC for the exercise, but the ex-INEC Chairman maintained that the election would go ahead as scheduled.

According to Jonathan, “I was disappointed by Jega because I still cannot understand what was propelling him to act the way he did in the weeks preceding the election.

“As at the first week in February 2015 when about 40 percent of Nigerians had not collected their PVCs, Jega said INEC was ready to conduct an election in which millions of people would be disenfranchised.

“Of course, the Americans were encouraging him to go ahead yet they would never do such a thing in their own country. How could we have cynically disenfranchised about a third of our registered voters for no fault of theirs and still call that a credible election?”

“The interesting thing was that the opposition also supported the idea of going on with the election that was bound to end in confusion,” the former president said.

The book which was seen by TheCable quoted the former President as saying security reasons was responsible for the postponement of the election.

“When the military and security chiefs demanded for more time to deal with the insurgency, the reasons were genuine.

“As at February 2015, it would have been very difficult to vote in Gombe, Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states.

“But the moment all the arms and ammunition that had been ordered finally arrived, the military was able to use them to degrade the capacity of Boko Haram to the level in which they posed the threat to the election,” he said.

Biafra: Nnamdi Kanu returns to Kuje Prison, despite being granted bail

Operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, and men of the Nigerian Prisons Service, DSS, returned the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, back to Kuje Prison after he was granted bail by an Abuja Federal High Court.

The decision shows that until Kanu meets his bail condition, he cannot be set free.

Kanu alongside three other pro-Biafra agitators were whisked away in a green prisons vehicle escorted by four other black hilux vans carrying men of the secret police.

Recall that the Justice Binta Nyako-led Court had earlier granted the IPOB leader bail on health grounds.

In her ruling, the judge had ordered Kanu to provide three sureties one of who must be a serving senator, a jewish religious leader and highly respected person.

She held that they must own property anywhere in Abuja, but put the bail bond at N100 million for each surety.

Justice Nyako also ordered the IPOB leader never to grant any press interview pending the outcome of his trial.

Noting that Kanu should not be in a gathering of more than 10 persons, the judge warned that the bail granted the IPOB leader would be revoked if any of the orders are flouted.
