2 Nigerians killed in South Africa – yet again

Barely three days after Ikejiaku Chinedu, a 35-year-old Nigerian businessman, was beaten to death in South Africa, two other Nigerians have been killed in the country. The fresh cases of death bring to 17, the total number of Nigerians killed in 2016 alone.

Lamenting over the incessant killings, Ikechukwu Anyene, president, Nigeria Union in South Africa, called for the intervention of the federal government.“The Nigerian community in South Africa is not happy with the killings,” he told NAN.

“We urge the federal government to persuade its South African counterpart to investigate and prosecute incidents of killings of Nigerians in that country. “We are getting worried about these incessant killings and we want the culprits prosecuted.” Anyene said the most recent tragic incidents occurred at different areas of Johannesburg.

He said that the first victim, Gideon Ogalaonye, an indigene of Onitsha, Anambra, was allegedly shot dead at 7 pm while on a visit to the residence of his daughters, and that the second victim, Nnamdi Michael, an indigene of Enugu state, was allegedly stabbed to death by a Zimbabwean national at Yeoville.

Anyene quoted witnesses as saying the assailant first demanded for money from Michael, which was not given and later attempted to forcefully remove his phone. He said that the assailant stabbed the victim, adding that Nigerians at scene pursued and arrested him. “The Zimbabwean has been handed over to the police and we will follow the case,” he said.
“The two incidents have been reported to the Nigerian mission in South Africa and the South African police.”

Fayose: Sheriff’s Chairmanship of PDP a Mistake

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has described the chairmanship of  Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  as a mistake.Fayose, who noted: “I take responsibility for that?
I will not be in the forefront again to carry responsibility for any man”  but pointed out that “he will first seek the face of God to choose the right man for the people.”
Fayose, made the remarks at the weekend , in his speech while commenting on the chairmanship tour of Dr. Raymond Dopespi, to Ekiti State at the Jibowu Hall, Government House.
He said the PDP in Ekiti is deeply concern on the current situation of the party right now, saying the party has broken into factions because everybody wants to be masters in the party.
Fayose, who condemned those going to court to express their grievances on  party matters, also condemned those who are paying lip services to the party.
He pointed out that the “dry bones of the PDP will rise again”, saying “God will give the PDP a new leader that will reposition the party to progress in the country.
Fayose said: “In Ekiti, we have no anointed candidate; we would come to Port Harcourt with open mind and let God do justice” In his speech, while soliciting for support in Ekiti, the PDP chairmanship aspirant, Dokpesi, pleaded with the stakeholders to allow him to serve the party.
According to him, he is a leader, a transformer and a bridge builder, who will promote, protect and project the PDP by bringing freshness into the party.
Dokpesi said the APC since the last general election has not allowed the PDP leaders to rest, he urged the PDP to stand and defend the democracy in the country.
“The leader who believed in the people, that is the leader we need in our democracy.”
He later debunked the insinuation that he had step-down for Chief Bode George.  I am still in the race, at no time have I step down for Chief Bode George.  We need fresh blood to run the PDP.  I will stand by you and defend the PDP.
The PDP chairman in Ekiti, Gboyega Oguntuase, appreciates the aspirant adding that God would support his ambition.
Dokpesi’s tour of Ekiti, is the 17 states he has visited by road and last in the southern part of the country.

For president in 2019 with Ondo State Governor Segun Mimiko as his running mate- Atiku Abubakar

Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has raised the alarm over the activities of some fifth columnists trying desperately to cause disunity within the All Progressives Congress (APC) Atiku dismissed as a load of hogwash a newspaper report alleging that he had formed a new political platform on which he would run for president in 2019, with Ondo State Governor Segun Mimiko as his running mate.
He said the aim of those fuelling such trouble was to portray him as being disloyal to President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC leadership.
In statement signed by his Media Adviser, Mr. Paul Ibe, the former vice president said the report bears all the features of a political hatchet job planted by his opponents who have desperately tried to invent events in order to draw a wedge between him and President Buhari on one hand and APC leadership as a whole.
The statement alerted Nigerians and APC leadership that there are “some people of bad faith trying tooth and nail to spread the seeds of discord in the party, and destroy the much needed unity, harmony and cohesion  which are the pillars of strength for every political organisation.”
Ibe said despite all these smear campaigns and reputation-lynching and sponsored falsehoods, the Atiku’s loyalty to President Buhari and the APC leadership would not be shaken an inch.
According to Ibe, “The report was an incompetent product of fiction, so shallow and vacuous that even its authors could not validate its credibility with reliable and verifiable sources.”
He explained that Atiku would ordinarily have ignored the malicious report, but said he chose to react, lest his silence would be mistaken as an admission of the falsehoods published against him.

I gave N1.2bn to Obanikoro, bank official tells EFCC

An official of Diamond Bank, Damola Otuyalo, has told officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission that he personally handed over N1.2bn to a former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, and his son, Gbolahan.

The entire exercise was said to have been captured on a Closed Circuit Television.
According to the EFCC, the N1.2bn was part of the N4.7bn paid into the company account of Obanikoro’s sons by the Office of the National Security Adviser during the build-up to the Ekiti and Osun states governorship election in 2014. Otuyalo, who is the Head of Cash-in-Transit Services, told detectives that his duty was to evacuate excess cash from bank’s branches and move it to locations where money was needed. The bank official told investigators that on June 16, 2014, he received a call from the Head of Operations and Technology, Mr. Premier Oiwoh, to arrange N1.2bn and pay six beneficiaries.

He said he was asked to pay the following persons: Saturaki Bello N200m; Yusuf Bulama N120m; Chimenum Njoku N250m; Franklin Tolani N150m; Josiah Moses  N280; and Abubakar Sadiq Zanna N200m. Otuyalo, however, explained that he was unable to pay them the money and that his director then instructed him to move the N1.2bn to the private wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos on June 17. The bank official was quoted to have said, “The beneficiaries were not available to be paid as I did not see them and I was later directed by Mr. Premier Oiwoh to move the money to the airport where I will be given further instruction.

“We moved the cash to the airport through the Cash-In-Transit vendor, Bankers Warehouse Limited. I contacted the vendor who made the bullion van available for movement. I personally supervised the loading of the money into the bullion van and escorted them to the airport.” Otuyalo said on getting to the airport around 7am, he was not allowed into the private wing because he and the security detail did not have a gate pass. He said a few minutes later, Obanikoro’s son came to the main gate and asked the security to let the bullion van in.

The bank official further stated, “When Gbolahan got to the gate, he cleared us and we drove in. My boss, Mr. Premier Oiwoh, called me on the telephone and confirmed to me that Obanikoro was the beneficiary of the money.“I handed my phone over to Gbolahan and he spoke to my boss. Obanikoro came to meet us at the private wing with two policemen and some friends. I recognised Obanikoro very well because he is popular.”

Otuyalo told detectives that due to the large amount of money involved, it took them several hours to offload the cash unto the aeroplane. He explained that it took three aeroplanes to carry all the money.

Otuyalo added, “We loaded the first aircraft with money and Obanikoro flew with his friends on the first flight. The second aircraft was loaded with money but it could not carry all the cash due to the size of the aircraft and the weight it could carry. “I recall that another aircraft was also used to move the final batch of the money from the bullion van. The second and third movements were supervised by Gbolahan after Obanikoro had left with the first flight.

“The operation took several hours because we got to the airport around 7am and left around 4pm. The cash was bagged in cash bags totalling about 65 and everything was offloaded from the bullion van after which I reported to my boss, Mr. Oiwoh.”

Detectives told our correspondent that the N1.2bn was flown to Akure Airport and Obanikoro allegedly handed over the money to an associate of Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, Mr. Abiodun Agbele, who had since been detained by the EFCC. He added that Officials of Zenith Bank arrived at the Akure Airport tarmac in a bullion van to convey all the cash to the bank’s vault located at 13, Alagbaka Estate, Akure.

He also said that the detective, who presented bank tellers, added that Agbele gave the bank instructions at different times to pay in money into Fayose’s Zenith Bank account even after the elections.

He added, “Agbele directed the bank to pay N137m into the account of Ayodele Fayose with number 1003126654 and Bank Verification Number 22338867502. The bank teller dated June 26, 2014, was filled by Agbele with teller number 0556814. “Agbele directed the bank to transfer N118, 760, 000 to the same account and paid in N50m cash into Fayose’s account. “On April 7, 2015, several months later, Fayose personally moved N300m to his fixed deposit account at Zenith Bank with number 9013074033 with his same BVN. The account is domiciled at 15 Olusola Abiona Street, Estate, Alapere, Ketu, Lagos.”

The source added that on the instruction of Fayose, Agbele deposited N100m to the account of Spotless Investment Limited, a hotel which is owned by Fayose and his wife, Olayemi. Fayose allegedly used part of the money to buy houses in Abuja and Lagos. The houses had since been seized while his bank account with a balance of N380m was frozen. Both Fayose and Obanikoro have denied the allegations levelled against them. One of Obanikoro’s media aides, Mr. Jonathan Eze, told one of our correspondents on Saturday that he was driving and would call back. He was yet to do so as of press time.
When contacted, Head, Media Relations/Corporate Communications of Diamond Bank, Mr. Mike Omeife, told one of our correspondents that he could not confirm the report. He said, “I have not been able to confirm from the unit what he (Otuyalo) said. I need to get the information from the unit; I need to get clarifications, and will then, get back to you.

“This is  weekend. I need to get authentic information from the unit before speaking to you.”

Military rains bombs on Ijaw militants in South-West

No fewer than 100 people suspected to be militants have been reportedly killed as the Nigerian military on Saturday continued the aerial bombardment of Fatola, the base of militants and pipeline vandals in the Arepo area of Ogun State.

One of our correspondents who was around the scene of the incident at the time, observed that the attack started at about 12pm and lasted for about 30 minutes. Our correspondent counted at least eight missiles fired by a fighter jet, which flew across the creek at intervals. Another aircraft was observed hovering around the area. Residents, who were caught unawares, ran for their lives due to the ground-shaking effects of the missiles.
Business activities were grounded and many residents fled their houses for fear of being hit by missiles. A resident who was on the road when the shots were fired said the Saturday attack was more intense than previous air raids.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, she said, “The air raid started on Thursday evening. It was just a missile that was released, but the effect was serious. On Friday evening, another airplane which flew across the creek released gunfire which lasted for some minutes. I could hear the shots as if they were fired close at me. But the Thursday and Friday attacks were child’s play compared with that of today (Saturday). “The aircraft releasing the missiles had three short wings with a sharp mouth. It maintained a visible presence in the sky and anytime it wanted to fire, it flew down as if it was about to crash. I never knew the military had such a weapon.” Another resident, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, told our correspondent that he lay flat in his apartment during the Saturday attack.
He said, “I was alone in the house with my son. The boy shook with fright every time a missile landed. I carried him and lay flat on the floor. The missiles shook the whole ground. I am not sure if I would  continue to live here because of this. My landlord left with his family yesterday.”

A source close to the millitants told SUNDAY PUNCH that the missiles levelled the base of the militants, adding that more than 100 people were killed. He said, “The whole place has been levelled. From the information I just gathered, those killed today (Saturday) cannot be less than 100. I am aware that some of them (the militants) are presently in the waters where they are hiding. They are making calls and seeking escape routes from the place.”

Another source, who asked the military to intensify attacks on the militants, said the militants abandoned their ammunition in the creeks. He said the men could regroup and cause greater havoc if given a breathing space. He said, “The heat is on them. One of them said it was because of the kidnap of a monarch in Lagos (Oniba of Iba) that the missile attack was intensified.
“He said he had asked his colleagues to release the monarch, but they didn’t listen. I am aware that the monarch will be released between today and tomorrow, if he has not been killed.

“The military should deploy secret officials in Ibafo, Pakuro, Wawa and other villages. I believe those places will be their next hideouts. They must not be given any breathing space. If they are allowed to regroup, there will be serious problems.”

The acting Director of Defence Information, Brig-General Rabe Abubakar, confirmed the air strikes.
He said, “The joint operation will continue until the area is secure and free from all forms of unwanted and criminal gangs whether they are militants or vandals.” Abubakar, told one of our correspondents on the telephone on Saturday that while he would not confirm the exact casualty figure, the knew that some of the camps of the vandals were destroyed. He gave the assurance that the military would ensure the destruction of more camps in the ongoing operation.
He said, “No, we cannot confirm the exact casualty figure in the operation. There are so many camps, and we will continue to  destroy them in that operation.
“We have taken some camps. The casualties cannot be confirmed but I know that we were able to target some of their camps and locations.”

Meanwhile, in an attempt to forestall the spate of militants’ attacks, the Onijegun of Ijegun land in Lagos State, Oba Nureni Akinremi, on Friday convened a meeting at his palace.
Sunday PUNCH learnt that the meeting, which was attended by all the chairmen of community development associations in Ijegun, examined the solution to security challenges posed by the militants. A source close to the palace and who also attended the meeting told one of our correspondents that the community had resolved to hire members of the Oodua People’s Congress to man strategic locations in the neighbourhood. The source added that operational vehicles, motorcycles and walkie-talkies would be provided for the operatives to ensure effective performance. He said, “We have agreed to engage members of the Oodua People’s Congress for the protection of the whole Ijegun against all the attacks that claimed lives in the community.  We plan to hire 70 guards who would be deployed in various strategic points in the community. “The guards are specifically meant to checkmate militants’ attacks but they will also be working with the existing security men in each CDA. We have budgeted N5m to ensure their smooth operations and they will start by Monday.

“People have made donations and contributions are on going in each CDA. We want to buy three buses and at least 10 motorcycles to aid their operations. We have already bought walkie talkie for them to communicate with one another and they are well armed. By God’s grace, the buses will be available on Monday.

“The operatives are a registered security organisation and they have their uniform and identity cards.”
The source added, “Apart from that, we have resolved that from 12am till 5am, no okada rider will be allowed to operate in the community except there is an emergency.

“We also want to create awareness for all residents on the need to be security conscious. We are going to do this through distribution of pamphlets and announcements on radio stations. The abduction of the Oniba of Iba and attacks on communities in Lagos and Ogun states are very disturbing. That is why we are taking all these measures.”

Okorocha has no power to slash working days –Imo NLC chairman

IMO State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Austin Chilakpu, has declared that Governor Rochas Okorocha does not have the power to determine working days in the state contrary to what the Nigeria constitution  has already prescribed.

Okorocha had last Friday during an interactive session with Journalists disclosed that the state executive council was considering slashing the working days from the normal five days to three to avail civil servants in the state the opportunity of engaging in other businesses to earn extra income to augment their salaries.
NLC Chairman, in his reaction, said the slashing of the constitutionally prescribed working days was beyond the powers of any state government including that of Imo State.
According to him, the International Labour Organization has prescribed 40 working
Hours from Monday to Friday which is what the Nigeria constitution has adopted, and as such could not be altered on the whims of the Imo State Governor.
The NLC boss further pointed out that public holidays recognized by the Federal Government are listed in the calendar, noting that what the Imo State government was trying to do was to subvert the laws of the  country.

“Claims by Governor Okorocha that Imo State pays the highest salaries in the entire Southeast is not correct because the workers in the state receive the same minimum wage paid by other states and it is not a gift but as a result of negotiation. There are states that pay more than Imo State. I don’t know why the governor always tries to borrow negative examples,” Chilakpu queried.
